The Tofu Gear Ledger

In a northern commune in the 1980s, Chen Fengxia, the “Tofu Beauty,” brandishes an account book soaked in soy milk as she chases Wang Fugui, a bicycle repairman who owes her the price of three blocks of tofu. The clatter of a jammed bike chain mingles with the sound of chopping chilies, unexpectedly bringing to light the secret signals of their parents’ generation. The scar on Wang Fugui’s palm is the “revolutionary key” left by his father, who lost a finger while repairing railway tracks. The soybean tied in a red cord around Chen Fengxia’s wrist is the “intelligence seed” her mother hid beneath a millstone. Back then, three blocks of tofu could buy a gear, and those gears helped feed the guerrillas and pass along coded messages. A yellowed ledger in a cave on Yingzui Mountain reveals a secret from 1943: Zhao the Blind used pigeon droppings to lay out Morse code; Li Tiedan’s father once broke a wrench while sabotaging Japanese railway tracks; and a five-pointed star was hidden beneath the cherry-blossom pattern on Director Zhang’s steering wheel. When the stone door opens at last to the gesture of “lifting with gears,” a gear transport map, secret messages in tofu baskets, and codes tapped out in the rhythm of a bicycle chain weave the passion of the older generation into the everyday bustle of street life. This is no heroic epic, but a record of ordinary people’s lives, hidden in tofu dregs, chili water, and the clatter of bike chains. Wang Fugui’s old 28-inch bicycle and Chen Fengxia’s slingshot keep the revolutionary spark alive amid the daily business of collecting debts. History has never been far away. It is hidden in a mother’s red cord and the chipped edge of a father’s wrench, simmering into a warmth that outlasts any debt through the “clatter, clatter” of ordinary life.
