Siheyuan: Starting Out as the Young Uncle

He Weiguo stood at the entrance to Nanluoguxiang, his homespun jacket flapping in the wind. He was in his early twenties, his face darkened by the sun, yet a smile tugged at his lips. It was not a simple, honest smile. His eyes curved like crescent moons, but remained clear and bright.

He clutched two things in his hand: an old returned letter and a foreign coin.

The letter was written years ago by He Daqing to a cousin back in his hometown. It mentioned that my son Yuzhu is working at a steel mill in the capital and has a meal to eat. The address had changed, so the letter was returned and left beneath the kang mat back home for three years. He Weiguo happened to find it.

The coin had come with him when he transmigrated. Three years ago, he had arrived from 2024 with this one modern coin in his pocket. He spent three years in the countryside trading mountain goods, pickled vegetables, and handmade locks, saving up eighty yuan. He sold the coin as foreign currency for 120 yuan. Two hundred yuan, two jars of pickled vegetables, half a sack of white flour, and a piece of cured meat: that was everything he owned.
