Drawing Marvel Comics During the Great Depression, I Obtain a Steel Body

Colin switches back and forth between two worlds every day: modern New York, overflowing with superheroes, and 1931, in the depths of the Great Depression.

In the modern world, he's a rookie reporter at the Daily Bugle, recently shot in the chest by a robber. In the Great Depression, he's the impoverished owner of the Messenger newspaper, whose office is on the verge of shutting down. The newsboys can't even afford bread.

But between these two worlds, he discovers something even more bizarre. When he comes into contact with Luke Cage, the words "time fragments," "black iron marks," and "faith points" appear before his eyes. He realizes that the superheroes in this world all seem to carry some kind of distorted remnant of time.

Stranger still, when he has the newsboys sing a song about "Superman" in the Great Depression, newspaper sales skyrocket. And in that world, Superman really does begin to appear.

He wasn't drawn. He was sung into existence. He wasn't made up. He was believed into existence.
