A Miserable Life

The honest, peaceful residents of Wutong Alley are all working together under village chief Liu Yuquan and Party secretary Ao Wenchuang to make their home the most beautiful village around. Everyone is hardworking and kind.

The only troublemakers in the alley are Zhang Guilan and her son. The two are miserly, greedy for petty gains, always taking advantage of others, and never returning what they borrow. All they do is cause trouble and stir up conflict, never contributing anything to the village. When they can't get anything out of it, they turn spiteful, repeatedly sabotaging the village's good projects and making life difficult for the gentle, well-behaved Lin Huiying.

Lin Huiying quietly goes about her life, still mourning the one she lost, with no desire for conflict, yet she is repeatedly targeted with malice.

Fortunately, the village chief's son and the alley's most handsome young man, Liu Keke, is her childhood friend. Knowing that she still carries someone from her past in her heart, he buries his years of unrequited love and silently protects her in the name of friendship. Wang Ying, a kindhearted villager who gets along with everyone, often steps in to defend her too.

Good and evil will always meet their due. The idle Li Goudan racks up enormous debts he cannot repay. Zhang Guilan and her son, who have committed one misdeed after another, suffer the consequences and are both driven out of the village.

With the dark clouds gone, peace returns to Wutong Alley. Lin Huiying finally breaks free of her troubled past and welcomes a bright future of her own.
