Wings of a Dream

When Ding Xiaopeng was eight, both his hands touched a high-voltage wire, putting his life in danger. After four surgeries, both arms were amputated high up to save him. From then on, he faced one hardship after another. Through sheer willpower, he trained himself to write with his feet, eat, and manage other everyday tasks. Gradually, he overcame his circumstances and grew into a strong, independent person. He went on to win the world championship in long-distance running for athletes with disabilities, only to suffer an unexpected setback while competing for a spot at the Paralympics. After retiring, he failed repeatedly in business, yet each time he picked himself up again. Eventually, he found a career suited to him and, despite all the twists and turns, found love as well. Along the way, he kept reflecting on life and came to a profound understanding of its meaning: life is not about defeating others or winning a certain number of gold medals, but about continually awakening to yourself, understanding yourself, and surpassing yourself.

The first stage of his growth was typical of a person with a disability who felt inferior. Through competitiveness and hard work, he won a host of gold medals and accolades, earning society's recognition. In the latter half of his journey, he began to turn inward. Through his actions, he helped more people with disabilities overcome the shadows in their hearts. His understanding of fame and success changed, too: where he once believed success meant happiness, he came to find that he could face success or failure with equanimity. What mattered was feeling fulfilled within.
