My first time recommending books. I’m not aiming to be number one, just hoping to save everyone some time.
I plan to use a coded format, with the first two lines showing information about the whole list. On Qidian’s website, you can use Ctrl+F to find the sections you’re interested in.
I’ll focus on sci-fi first.
1. I don’t think the distinction between soft and hard sci-fi is about how closely it matches its era, but how much it makes you think. So I’ve divided them as follows:
Soft: It shows you what happens, but not why.
Hard: It also tries to explain why.
2. Most conflicts unfold through struggle, and in sci-fi, that usually means war. So I’ve coded them as:
Energy-based: Victory comes from continually stacking up your abilities.
Rule-based: More emphasis on how different rules change the nature of war.
3. You can guess the story’s tropes from when it begins. Since I probably won’t recommend anything published before 2000, I’ve left out the first two digits and listed the year the story begins.
4. The word count can help you estimate how long it’ll take to read, and comparing it to how long the author spent writing can give you an idea of how polished it is. I’ve included both, rounded to the nearest hundred thousand or million for easy reference.
5. I’ve listed the highest word count the novel reached, so you can estimate its final length.
