Historical fiction. I can't remember when I first came across the term. When I learned that historical fiction existed alongside xuanhuan, I was thrilled, and felt a deep sense of awe. Xuanhuan stories can be made up on the spot, but historical fiction takes real knowledge. Without some learning under your belt, your readers may know more history than you do. Read history widely, trace its threads, dissect it, stay true to it, find the right way in, and then begin writing. Everyone knows historical fiction has its limitations. History without a soul breathed into it by the author is dry and dull. But history given a lively soul can be every bit as exciting as urban or xuanhuan fiction. That's the wonder of history! I've read hundreds of historical novels. Some new authors have the history down, but their stories have no appeal. They say that's just how history is, that its limitations hold their writing back. To me, history is vast and boundless. History is the present, and the present is history. It can be as lively as you want, full of blood and life! A Warehouse in Daming and Tang Bricks feel as if they happened just yesterday, and the authors merely happened to pass by and record them.
