Windrider

Watch as a rich second-generation heir falls from handsome and wealthy to utterly useless, then rises from a washout to become a racing legend. But being a racing legend is only one of the many honors the protagonist will earn. When a virus strikes, when another world war begins, when the planet faces destruction... Competition is the main story, while laughing at the world and battling evil forces are part of the fun too.
