Across the Qin Riverlands

Whenever someone writes an alternate history, it always starts with the Three Kingdoms, especially the Three Kingdoms. Basically, every character in Romance of the Three Kingdoms could have an entire book written about them, while very few people write about the late Qin and early Han. I don't know why. In fact, the late Qin and early Han had no shortage of heroes, and were every bit as rich in them as the Three Kingdoms, if not more so. Among them was the loyal Marquis of Guannei, Meng Tian, a general for three generations who dealt the Xiongnu heavy blows, built the Great Wall, and constructed the Straight Road. There was Chen Sheng, a village head who cried, “Are kings and generals born to their station?” He led nine hundred garrison soldiers in an uprising at Dazexiang, igniting the blaze that would bring down the Qin dynasty. There was Liu Bang, a notorious rogue who had started out as a pavilion chief in Sishui and went on to seize the entire Qin realm. There was Xiang Yu, a descendant of the Chu state's god of war, Xiang Yan. With thirty thousand Chu soldiers, he first defeated an army of two hundred thousand Qin troops, then three hundred thousand, then six hundred thousand. His fame shook the land, and every rebel general bowed to him. He burned the Qin Epang Palace and met his end by taking his own life at the Wu River. What a hero! There was the god of war Ying Bu, branded on the face as a convict and made a vanguard general for the Chu army. He often won against vastly superior numbers and was eventually made a king. There was Zhang Liang, a chivalrous young man who spent a fortune to recruit a brave warrior and attack the First Emperor's carriage at Bolangsha. Later, he became famous for his resourcefulness and helped Liu Bang unite the realm. There was Han Xin, who had been frustrated in his youth and looked down upon by others. Later, Liu Bang made him commander-in-chief. He led his army out of Chencang, pacified the Three Qins, defeated Dai, destroyed Zhao, subdued Yan, and conquered Qi, until he wiped out the Chu army at Gaixia. He never lost a battle, and no one under heaven dared challenge him. There was Xiao He, far-sighted and gifted with an eye for talent. And many, many more, as numerous as the stars, all perfect material for a novel. So why can't they be used to write one?
