A Young Builder in the Gobi

Yellow sands sweep across the Gobi as young Chen leaves his hometown and joins a construction crew heading for the desolate northwest. Scarce water, fierce winds, and vast temperature swings between day and night are the first trials this land sets for its builders. Starting out as an apprentice hauling materials and taking elevation measurements, he learns from seasoned workers to set out lines, monitor excavations, and watch over formwork. He is tempered by one sandstorm after another, shortages of materials, and emergencies on site. He sees lights glowing in dugout homes, listens to late-night conversations at the worksite, and witnesses roads and stations rise from the desert, little by little. Calluses form on the boy's palms as his youthful awkwardness fades. At last, he understands the weight of construction: it is not just reinforced concrete, but the steadfastness of generations of builders who put down roots in the Gobi and wrest a home from barren land. This is the story of a boy's growth and transformation on a Gobi construction site, capturing the passion, resilience, and homesickness of the people building up the northwest.
