Chen Mo had been repairing air conditioners for ten years. He'd seen every kind of malfunction: no cooling, leaks, strange noises, even outdoor units catching fire. He thought nothing could surprise him anymore. Until that afternoon in August. Auntie Zhang stood in the living room on the eighteenth floor, wearing a thin knitted jacket. She smiled at him and said, "Young man, it doesn't seem all that hot this year." Chen Mo opened the air conditioner panel to inspect the heat sink. And then he saw them. Three and a half translucent patterns crawled across the fins. They looked like circuit traces, or veins. After ten years of fixing things, he learned for the first time that when equipment breaks, it isn't always the equipment's fault. Later, he found Article Seven of the appendix to the Repair Engineer's Operations Manual: "After completing repairs, confirm that the calibration label is affixed in the correct position. If you find that the label has come loose, report it immediately and stop using the equipment." "Warning: The calibration label is part of the equipment. Do not remove it. Do not look at the back of the label." Chen Mo touched his employee badge. A tiny label was stuck to the back. You think you're enjoying after-sales service. In truth, you've been signing for the part of yourself you've lost all along.
