The Hobbit: Battle of the Northern Ruins

The Third Age has ended with the Battle of Five Armies. The Lonely Mountain has returned to the Dwarves, but the northern lands are strewn with ruins, and the Misty Mountains and the old shores of Long Lake bear scars from the war. Far away, the Shire remains peaceful. Wheat fields ripple in the breeze, and Hobbits enjoy their hearths, good food, and comfortable lives. They tell stories of Bilbo Baggins’s famous adventures across Middle-earth, knowing little of the hardships in the North. Sember Baggins is a distant descendant of the Baggins family. Content with the comforts of home and afraid of the dangers beyond it, he has never yearned for a hero’s adventures. Then a flood rushes down from the North, carrying a bronze casket etched with runes to the banks of the Shire River. Inside lies a letter from a Dwarven craftsman, never sent before he died in battle, bearing a longing that spans mountains and rivers. Unable to turn away, Sember has no choice but to leave his warm hobbit-hole and set out alone on the long road to the northern ruins. He has neither a sharp weapon nor powerful magic. All he can rely on is the natural kindness and resilience of Hobbits. Crossing the ruined northern wilderness, he witnesses the wounds left by war and encounters a disillusioned Dwarf, wandering Men, and Elves whose glory is fading, all while evading the threat of Orc remnants. The battlefields of the northern ruins have long fallen silent, but the struggle of ordinary people has only just begun. This is no fight over treasure or royal power. It is a struggle against the fear within oneself, and a test of one’s resolve to keep a promise. After enduring the North’s hardships, Sember will finally understand that the noblest courage is to keep pressing on toward home, even after passing through ruins as far as the eye can see.
