Untitled: Different Paths

In the twenty-fourth year of Yonghui in the Yin Dynasty, the Chancellor's household fell overnight. On the night his whole family was imprisoned, Gu Yichen knelt beneath the steps of the Eastern Palace, blood rising in his throat. “Your Highness, please save my father.” Mu Dihua stood deep in the shadows beneath the eaves, silent for a long while. He gave only three words in reply: “I can't save him.” Eight years later, a new emperor ascended the throne, and the Prince of Zhennan's military achievements shook the realm. The polished strokes of the history books recorded the emperor's statecraft and the general's arrogance, their suspicions, their efforts to keep each other in check, and their outward harmony masking inner discord. Everyone said it was a tacit contest. And so The emperor advanced step by step, holding a blade to his minister's throat; the prince ventured deep into enemy territory alone, staking his life on the fate of the realm. Imperial edicts and military dispatches traveled toward each other along the post road. In the dark, wine cups and swords were raised at the same time. Was every mark in the military record a bid for atonement? A path home? Or... a blade raised against the illusions of the past? One man played chess before the imperial court, while another burned himself on the beacon tower. One struggled for his family, seeing the truth of his country and its people from the bottom rung of society; the other declared war on imperial power and reclaimed himself from the abyss. Only in a hidden chamber of the Hall of Supreme Harmony, in the blank space of the painting Seeking the Spring Shade, were two lines of poetry inscribed. Ink had been brushed over them, yet their traces had bled through the back of the silk: “You shape the willow into the spirit of the wind; I move the green mountains to make them my old soul. When peace reigns beneath all the skies, may we warm once more... the spring of years gone by.” Note: The story is told from the perspectives of two male leads. It is an ancient-style court-intrigue tale, with a friendship between ruler and subject and sworn brothers!
