Slower Than Light

A cargo ship captain who has been drifting in space for twelve years and never said goodbye to anyone wants to know where his father has gone. What stands in front of him is not a monster, but a layer of causal structure itself - which can only be moved by "response" and cannot be broken by "understanding"; and the Earth Council, which wants to turn this structure into a weapon.
