Second Daughter

At 1:47 in the morning, Zhou Lan walked into the restroom of the expressway service area with two girls wearing the same yellow raincoat. She lowered her head to tie her shoelaces once, and one of the children disappeared. There is no other exit from the bathroom, but the surveillance outside the door showed that Zhou Lan only had one girl with him from beginning to end. Tickets, consumption records, and the testimonies of twenty-one passengers all point to the same thing: the second child never got on the bus. The girl who stayed behind insisted when questioned that she had no older or younger sister. Heavy rain caused the highway to be closed in both directions. It would take at least four hours for rescuers to arrive. Zhou Lan must find the child before dawn and prove that the child really exists.
