After a heavy rain, modern mural restorer Meng Heng was invited to Cihang Temple in the mountains to restore twelve ancient murals that had been damaged by humans. Every woman's face on the mural has been scraped off, but the clothing patterns, utensils and inscriptions are extremely well preserved, as if someone deliberately left clues and deliberately erased the evidence of their existence. Meng Heng originally only wanted to find out the truth about the disappearance of his mother Gu Nanzhi ten years ago in Cihang Temple. But when she was repairing the first mural, a woman's whisper came from the wall; that night, she dreamed of entering the Golden Palace of the Sheng Dynasty and became Yan Qingling, a court musician who was slandered in history books as "the one who seduces the master with music." Music scores, prescriptions, military orders, business accounts, historical manuscripts, masks, ship deeds, divine speeches, prison books... The twelve murals correspond to twelve women swallowed by history. They are not troubles, witches, traitors, or unknown people mentioned in the official history. They have saved people, protected cities, and written the truth. They also used their own methods to hide their names in the wall in an era when women were not allowed to leave their names. Ancient writing researcher Xu Wenjing is responsible for interpreting the mural inscriptions. He believed in historical materials and Meng Heng believed in traces. While arguing, the two pieced together the true appearance of Cihang Temple before it was burned down, and gradually discovered that their mother Gu Nanzhi did not disappear for no reason at that time, but touched upon a folk history of women called "Cihang Lu". Restoration is not about making something old new. Restoration is allowing silence to speak again.
