A Biographical Chronicle of the Worthies of the Mou Clan

A Biographical Collection of the Worthies of the Mou Clan

A Biographical Collection of the Worthies of the Mou Clan is a collection of factual biographies and critical accounts of figures from the Mou clan throughout the generations. Drawing on official histories, local gazetteers, and genealogies, it presents biographies of forty-three Mou clan worthies in chronological order, from the pre-Qin era to the end of the Qing dynasty. The Mou surname ranks beyond the hundredth place in The Hundred Family Surnames, and historical records mention only a scattering of famous figures. This book gathers those scattered individuals into one volume, grounding itself in reliable history, using stories as its vehicle, and placing family values at its core. It seeks to show a whole clan through one person, and an era through a clan. Among its subjects are a loyal official who died after boldly remonstrating, a Confucian scholar who wrote and taught, a grand commandant who stood upright at court, a patriot who died resisting the Yuan, and scholars devoted to their fields. Their lives took very different forms, yet all embodied the core values of the Mou family tradition: farming and study passed down through generations, and a life founded on loyalty and righteousness. By embedding the family’s fate in the tides of historical change, the book forms both a thousand-year record of the Mou clan’s spirit and a portrait of Chinese society spanning more than two millennia. The history of one clan may be small, yet it is vast; the histories of countless families flow together into the nation’s immortal river.
