Biographies of One Hundred Famous Figures in Chinese History

A Biographical Collection of One Hundred Chinese Historical Figures: Introduction

They were written into the history books, only to be reduced to a few cold lines of summary.

Yu the Great controlled the floods and passed his own home three times without entering. But did anyone ask how long he stood outside his own door? Shang Yang's reforms made Qin powerful. But did anyone record what he cried out to the heavens when his own collective-punishment laws barred him from an inn? Sima Qian wrote Records of the Grand Historian, the greatest work ever produced by a historian. But did anyone describe how the wounds ached with every stroke of his brush in the chamber of castration? Su Shi was renowned for his open-heartedness, facing life's storms in a straw raincoat. But did anyone ask how many heartbreaks it took to forge that equanimity?

This book tells the life stories of 111 famous figures from Chinese history, but does not offer formulaic biographies or ready-made answers. From each life, we draw three to five pivotal moments that changed its course. Stories provide the bones, historical facts the flesh, and critical insight the soul. While respecting the historical record, we bring the past vividly to life: the suffering omitted from official histories, the vulnerability concealed by later glorification, and the fleeting moments of ordinary humanity drowned out by grand narratives.

We do not seek to judge them anew, but to see them anew. One hundred and eleven people, one hundred and eleven dilemmas, one hundred and eleven choices. Understand how they struggled against their times, wrestled with fate, and made peace with themselves, and you will understand the resilience and warmth in our blood that refuses to bow its head.
