1936, Romance in the Borderlands

A history graduate student who accomplished nothing in 2026 traveled to the Soviet area in northern Shaanxi in 1936, and followed Western reporter Ed into Red China as a translator. He taught in literacy classes, grew up in secret battles with enemy agents, and witnessed the torrent of history. He finally chose to stay, and found a truer belonging than modern life in witnessing and protection - and all of this was quietly connected to his grandmother, a girl named Xi'er, across ninety years of time and space.
