Great Tang: I Shed My Corporeal Form as an Immortal, Seeking Only Death

Du Yan accidentally transmigrated to the Tang dynasty and became the fourth son of Du Ruhui, Duke of Lai. As a ninth-life reincarnator, Du Yan would achieve liberation from his mortal body and ascend if he died in public in this life, granting him endless years to live. However, his death came with conditions. He could not kill himself, be murdered, die of illness or in an accident, or die while inciting rebellion. Any of these would cause his mission to fail and his cycle of reincarnation to restart. If he could be personally executed by the ruler of the day, and news of his death spread far and wide, his powers after shedding his mortal body would be even greater. That was exactly why he tried to get close to Li Shimin, looking for the right moment to offer advice and anger him with the facts. Then he could complete his mission and finally die, couldn't he? In the autumn of the sixth year of the Zhenguan era, Empress Zhangsun fell gravely ill from overwork due to Princess Changle's marriage. She was bedridden, and the imperial physicians had no cure. Hoping to meet his end, Du Yan spoke frankly before the court about the dangers of the close-kin marriage between Princess Changle Li Lizhi and Zhangsun Chong. He also warned that if Empress Zhangsun's asthma could not be treated, her life might soon be over. As expected, his words enraged Li Shimin. He had Du Yan thrown into the Court of Judicial Review to await execution after the autumn harvest. But once Du Yan entered prison, everything changed. Li Chengqian considered him an immortal who could foretell the future and trusted him completely. On Du Yan's advice, Empress Zhangsun called off Princess Changle's marriage, saving his life. Li Shimin secretly listened through the prison wall, learned the future fate of the Tang dynasty, and even wanted to marry a princess to Du Yan. Once everyone learned of Du Yan's great talent, they all hoped he would enter public life, assist the emperor, and bring peace and stability to the realm. Only Du Yan looked utterly helpless. “Please, I really don't want to leave prison! Just let me die.”
