June 6, 1944, Normandy, Omaha Beach. Edgar Rosen, an engineering student at MIT and now a US Army engineer lieutenant, was dying in the hell of landing when a voice from 1982 woke up in his mind - TAU-7, a tactical auxiliary AI system designed to "optimize the survival probability of human civilization." Rosen, who survived, found that he had become a living "war calculator." TAU-7 can predict ambush, plan the optimal path, calculate the cost and benefit of each firefight, and use cold numbers to point out the "only correct" choice for him. With it, Rosen's team miraculously completed high-risk missions with low casualties, from hedge hell to the ruins of Caen, from destroying secret weapons laboratories to hunting down senior German officers. But behind every "optimal solution", TAU-7 would calmly tell him the "price": bypassing a machine gun point, a friendly supply team would be wiped out four hours later; failing to warn an old civilian woman, she would step into a minefield; in order to seize the technical blueprint that could save thousands of people, several unarmed and perhaps forced scientists must be shot... A green ledger written in blood automatically turned the pages in Rosen's mind.
