Medicine Ushers in the Golden Age of the Tang: Examining Chang’an’s Spirit

Shen Yan, a modern medical student whose soul has transmigrated into the High Tang, only wants to practice medicine quietly and live in peace. But an imperial decree drags him into the empire’s most dangerous maelstrom: treating Crown Prince Li Chengqian, whose leg was broken in a fall from his horse.

Setting bones and treating injuries should be routine, but the familiar signs of addiction in the Crown Prince’s pulse make Shen Yan break into a cold sweat. A broken leg can be mended; a troubled heart is harder to heal. And just then, the Crown Prince clamps a hand around his wrist from his sickbed, his voice hoarse as a trapped beast’s: “Physician Shen… someone doesn’t want me to stand again.”

From that moment on, Shen Yan can no longer stay out of it.

His calling to heal can bring peace to all under heaven.

He uses medical skills far ahead of their time to tackle everything from epidemics in Chang’an and field hospitals on the frontier to improving farming and industry and establishing emergency-care standards. The spark of modern thinking quietly catches fire across the land.

And love, too, can be tender as silk around the fingers.

The gentle yet resilient Princess Changle, the cool and proud court official Pei Yun Zhao, the spirited and passionate pearl of the grasslands… Threads of affection wind through the empire’s turbulent affairs and the everyday bustle of its streets.

From a young physician in blue robes at the Imperial Medical Office, to a practical reformer watched closely by the court, and then to the esteemed “Master of Integrity” whose students are everywhere, Shen Yan is like a butterfly quietly spreading its wings. With compassion as his boat and knowledge as his oars, he subtly shifts the course of history in this Zhenguan era, an age of both splendor and crisis.

This is the story of a physician who serves all under heaven and reshapes the grandeur of the High Tang with the values of the future.
