The Realm and the Ink

During the Yongxi era, Emperor Zhao, eager to enact reforms, traveled south in disguise. Impressed by the talent and drive of Shen Yan, a successful candidate in the imperial examinations from a small town, he promoted him to the Ministry of Revenue and tasked him with implementing new policies centered on surveying farmland and collecting back taxes. Shen Yan lived up to the emperor's expectations, moving swiftly through Jiangnan and achieving initial success. But his actions struck at the core interests of powerful local elites, led by the tycoon Huang Wanwan.

Open and covert attacks followed one after another, making reform an uphill struggle. More devastating still, Huang Wanwan used lavish bribes to corrupt Prince Qin, Zhao Yuan, the emperor's younger brother and a man who commanded troops. Under immense pressure from the court and the realm, Emperor Zhao was forced to compromise, halt the reforms, and ultimately sacrifice Shen Yan to restore the balance of power. The Shen family collapsed overnight. Shen Yan died unjustly in a penal labor camp, and his family was plunged into an abyss.

Twelve years later, Shen Yan's son, Shen Jia, courtesy name Moyan, carried the family's hopes and a blood feud as he used his frontier military experience and exceptional intelligence to make his way into the final imperial examination. But Prince Zhao Yan framed him for colluding with the enemy. His honors were stripped away, and he was thrown into prison. In the depths of the imperial prison, delirious with fever, Shen Jia used his blood as ink and awakened a mysterious power, summoning the silent phantom of an Ink-Armored Army.

In the end, he was exiled to the bitterly cold northern frontier. His family's injustice, the sacrifices of his loved ones, and his own humiliation cruelly honed him like a whetstone, sharpening a blade long hidden from view. From a family of scholars to a camp of condemned soldiers, Shen Moyan's path of revenge and the fate of the empire were henceforth stained a deep, strange shade of ink.
