The City of Dreammakers

[Third prize in the 2024 “Shenzhen Stories: Writing the City of Miracles” themed writing contest] Feng Jingying, a Donghua University graduate with a passion for women’s fashion, heads to Shenzhen’s Dalang Fashion Town and joins Gofun Clothing Co., dreaming of becoming a fashion designer. Wu Meng, already a fashion designer herself, secretly longs to prove herself in another way. The two women happen to become roommates. Supporting and influencing one another, they pursue their dreams together in the Greater Bay Area’s fashion world, becoming the best companions on the journey. Coco Chanel said, “Fashion fades, only style remains.” Rebecca Arnold said, “Fashion is always chasing the latest trends, yet at the same time it never stops looking back at the past.” Feng Jingying says, “Making clothes isn’t just making clothes. It’s making dreams for countless women.” Wu Meng says, “Oh, I get it. No wonder my name isn’t ‘Song’ but ‘Dream.’” A city that makes dreams: a Shenzhen fashion story about two girls chasing their dreams.
