Some animals are docile because they are weak. Some are powerful and sturdy, yet still docile. Some radiate a plain, endearing charm, but when driven to desperation, they will fight to the death with astonishing ferocity. Some rely on all kinds of disguises to protect themselves. Some follow the rules of the group, with a strict hierarchy. Others have no hierarchy, yet still form groups of their own accord, united by a common goal. In some species, the sex of other individuals determines how a member will develop. Some willingly sacrifice themselves for the future of their kind. The many faces of beasts were a daily survival challenge for our human ancestors. Recognizing them always demanded a price and great effort.
