Some animals are gentle because they are weak. Others are strong and powerful, yet still gentle. Some radiate a simple, endearing charm, but when desperate, they will fight to the death with astonishing ferocity. Some rely on all kinds of camouflage to protect themselves. Some follow the rules of the group, with a strict hierarchy. Others have no hierarchy at all, yet naturally form groups and work in close unison toward a shared goal. In some animals, the sex of other individuals determines how they develop. Others willingly sacrifice themselves for the future of their kind. The faces of all kinds of beasts were challenges our human ancestors faced every day in their struggle to survive. Recognizing them always came at a cost and required effort.
