A Delicate Young Lady Is Hard to Raise

After transmigrating as the daughter of a county school instructor, a rank-eight official, Zhao Yanan thought, “Perfect.” She wouldn’t go hungry, and she wouldn’t have to deal with the scheming of a wealthy household. This was the modest, comfortable life she’d always wanted. However, because her big feet were considered improper, Zhao Yanan was left behind in the family’s rural home. Her maternal uncle, a licentiate, came to inspect his niece’s life in the countryside, only to be stunned by how thoroughly the Zhao family spoiled her. “In-law, you’re terribly busy with the fields right now. Why not let the girl stay with us for a while?” Her uncle had made up his mind: once she was under his roof, he would straighten out this sapling that had grown crooked. “Eldest son, just because you’re an official, does that mean you can beat your own child whenever you please?” Grandfather glared at his son. Was he daring to bully his granddaughter Yanan? “Father, if Yanan doesn’t change her ways, how will she ever marry into a scholarly family?” “Horsefeathers! Marry Yanan and her big feet into a scholarly family? That would be a crime! Better to find her an honest country lad. At least he’ll keep her happy for the rest of her life.” Grandfather set his son straight. “Grandfather is right. I’ll marry a farmer from the countryside. He’ll work the fields, I’ll water them, and we’ll both come home together!” Yanan said, getting a little carried away. “Impertinent! What kind of nonsense is that?” Yanan’s father was speechless. His daughter had made him lose all dignity! “Nonsense! He’ll work the fields and water them too. You can stay at home and wait for him to come back and cook. Or ask your sixth uncle to buy you a couple of maids to cook for you,” Grandfather said, thinking Yanan was wrong as well. Yanan’s father was left utterly dizzy. A child’s misbehavior was the father’s fault! Check out and support my new 2021 book, The Ruthless Daughter-in-Law!
