The Guilty Concubine

Excerpt One: “Drag her out!” The moment the child was born, he was already rushing to marry another woman, so impatient he couldn’t spare her another instant. “He’s my child!” She no longer wanted to fight. She screamed at the man in anguish, “I’ll let you have each other, but he’s my child. Give him back to me!” “Your child?” His gaze turned chillingly sinister as he gestured for the midwife to hand the baby to his woman. “He is not your child! Drag her out!” “You!” Looking into those bloodthirsty black eyes, she gave up hope. Laughing, she grabbed the sharp scissors beside her. Her hand rose, then fell. “My hair is severed, my love is severed. From this day on, you and I...” As his expression changed dramatically, she tossed the scissors aside. “...are forever estranged!” Excerpt Two: “How can it be you?” His cold, proud eyes trembled, and his handsome face turned deathly pale in an instant. Dressed in a black phoenix-patterned court gown, she reclined languidly on a chaise longue like a lazy fire fox. “What? Do you know me?” The bloodied sword in his hand clattered to the ground. He stood frozen in place. “Mother, they’ve broken in!” The five-year-old emperor’s anguished cry rang through the whole palace hall. “Mother knows.” She smiled, gently gathering her long black hair at her chest before rising gracefully and walking toward him. “Don’t be afraid, my son. With your mother here, no one...” Her wide sleeve swept up, revealing a blade that plunged straight into the man’s chest. “...will take your empire from you!” “You...” His towering body shuddered, and he stared in disbelief at the face so close to his. “Ha, you still hate me so much.” She had fought to survive in the narrowest of circumstances and obeyed fate by taking another’s place in marriage. Though she never fought or demanded anything, she still could not escape destiny’s cruel tricks, and could not bear a lifetime of love... He had a heart deep as the sea and had secretly built up his power, believing he could control everything. But he married the wrong woman and paid for it with his whole life.
