In this first academic book focusing on the culture of desire in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the author believes that only by comprehensively exploring the various new concepts about desire in that period can we make an in-depth discussion of the novels of the Ming and Qing Dynasties as a special narrative style. "Phoenix Library·Overseas China Studies Series: Desire and Fictional Narrative in Late Imperial China" closely links the maturation and development of this important genre with the increasingly complex discourse on desire in that period. The first three chapters of the book are an outline of the background history and theory of desire as a socio-cultural phenomenon. The last seven chapters are a close reading of a series of specific works of Ming and Qing novels, trying to depict the extremely complex development trajectory from "desire" to "emotion" in Ming and Qing novels.

The Great Depression of the 1930s was a global event that profoundly affected China's modern history. Since all countries at that time had moved away from the silver standard, the world's monetary system was dominated by the gold standard, and China was almost the only country in the world that still adopted the silver standard. Therefore, when the price of silver as a commodity in other countries in the world fluctuated, it would have a direct impact on China's financial and economic production. This book specifically demonstrates this transmission effect through the performance of the cotton spinning and silk reeling industries in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River during the Great Depression. When it finally could no longer withstand this impact, the Nationalist government had to actively carry out currency reform and abolish the silver standard. This currency reform led by the government has faced the challenges of complex international relations and severe domestic economic conditions from the beginning. Although the fiat currency reform to get rid of the silver standard was initially successful, foreign exchange reserves were still insufficient and fiscal and financial control was ineffective, which paved the way for greater chaos in the Chinese economy later.

By analyzing the supply and demand of silver in the world in the first half of the 19th century, that is, during the Jia, Dao, and Xian dynasties of the Qing Dynasty, this paper analyzes how China's currency system, which used both money and money, was involved in the world economy, thus causing China to be organically eroded by the world. The author analyzes the role of opium and silver in the balance of payments from the clues of international trade; analyzes the social disorder caused by the currency system and the social unrest within China caused by insufficient government tax revenue from the use of silver and currency; discusses the ideological debates caused by economic phenomena from the perspective of intellectual history, and analyzes the views of the main schools of economic thought during this period and its comparison with Western thought of the same period. "The Construction of the Heartland" uses rich historical materials from multiple countries (including China, Japan, the United States, folk and official historical materials), and based on previous research, explores the social, economic and ecological changes in the North China hinterland from 1853 to 1937 in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China and their causes. In the book, the author Pomeranz describes the social situation in the inland areas of North China, especially Henan, Shandong and other areas at that time, including a comprehensive description of the local finance, farming, transportation, taxation conditions and farmers' resistance struggles, and also compares the development of the inland and coastal areas of North China at that time. He believes that the development of social ecology and natural ecology in inland North China showed signs of decline during this period. Pomeranz not only painted a vivid and magnificent ecological portrait of the North China inland, but also used sociological theory, historical geography, social regional theory and other multiple perspectives to analyze the reasons for the decline of the North China inland. He pointed out that under the background of the country withdrawing from economic and policy support for local society and coastal areas, at this time, the inland of North China was encountering war and natural disasters, and decline was an inevitable result. China's hinterland is not inherently "backward"; this situation is more caused by the country and the current situation.
