Paris is Never Finished
Literature巴黎永远没有个完

In the first half of the 1920s, Hemingway lived in Paris as a correspondent in Europe. "Paris Never Ends" records the author's life at that time. However, Hemingway only wrote about this period of time nearly forty years later. In other words, both the author and the readers are only tracing those past years in their memories, and for both the author and the readers, these memories have been out of focus and distorted through the lens of time. All memories about Paris blend into a common historical memory of Paris. In this semi-documentary and semi-fictional work, the customs of the Paris literary circle in the 1920s slowly unfolded. The figures who dominated the world's literary and artistic circles at that time were vividly sketched with a few strokes, and they were forever integrated with the city. "Translation Huacai" is a new book series launched by Shanghai Translation Publishing House. The theme is clear and published in volumes, with five types in each volume, with exquisite covers that match the theme style. It is designed by the new generation of outstanding designer Zhou Weiwei. In terms of content, we make full use of the powerful and widely recognized translation resources of Shanghai Translation Publishing House to extract famous works from them into a volume. The theme of the first volume is "Wandering", including Gide, Hemingway, Lawrence, Nagai Kafeng, Maugham The travel writings of five famous literary figures include Gide's "Abandoning Travel", Hemingway's "Paris Never Ends", Lawrence "The Wandering Stranger", Nagai Kafeng's "Whispers on the Lotus Wind" and Somerset Maugham's "On His Majesty's Representation".

"A Moon in Chang'an from Ancient Times" selects the reminiscence essays about his hometown Tokyo and his "second hometown" Beijing from "The Complete Works of Shintaro Okuno" to tell Mr. Okuno's nostalgia for the two places. When he wrote about Tokyo, he mainly described his childhood family life, his ignorance in adolescence, and his study experience in his youth. The memories about his wife, parents, grandmother, and grandfather expressed his deep affection for his family. He writes about China with a look of exploration, appreciation and longing. He walked through the grassy alleys of the ancient capital of Beijing, missing the fragrance of jasmine in Sioux City, and lamenting the glory and death of women such as Yang Yuhuan and Yu Xuanji in the glory of the Tang Dynasty. Tokyo and Beijing, ancient people and modern people, share the same moonlight. The author recalls the past, expresses himself, and feels the joys and sorrows of the world.

Selected Essays of Conrad

Conrad's contribution to human reading is mainly reflected in three aspects: First, he used the ocean as the stage to show human nature and human living conditions. His description of the ocean is unparalleled. Second, he greatly innovated the way of telling novels and perfected the multi-layered narrative model. Third, his elegant and thoughtful Latin style revolutionized English expressions that were dying of vitality at the end of the 19th century and inspired new vitality in English. Conrad has described all of this in his prose works "The Sea is Like a Mirror", "Personal Notes" and "Last Prose". This translation of "Selected Prose of Conrad" intends to extract the essence of Conrad's prose creation and show readers all aspects of Conrad's life, such as his homeland and childhood, his life at sea, his anti-aggression opinions, and his literary creation and criticism. The purpose is to show readers a Conrad with a magnificent life, and to pave the way for the acceptance of Conrad's novels in China.

This is often the case in the prime years of life: long periods of time give way to frivolity, full of ambition, and finally return to laziness. Some people are sad about the spring and sad about the autumn, and are lonely and alone. Some people are complaining about the world and sighing about the earth, and they cannot bear to be lost. In fact, life is between breaths, and on the edge of gains and losses, there are still a few people who can escape unscathed, like autumn leaves, quiet and beautiful, neither complicated nor chaotic. Now that you are alive, you might as well live your life like Whitman, neither as a silent stream of water nor as a turbulent river at the top of the storm, but as a proud bloomer, like a lotus blooming at first, with the scent of mud everywhere on the grass blades, and as gorgeous as a summer flower at its peak, unfailing. The book collects Whitman's works in various styles, including his spiritual diary of sketches of nature, his experiences and insights during his travels, impassioned speeches, documentary essays on his personal life, and his own literary attitude. The all-round and three-dimensional reproduction of the vivid and real Whitman leads readers step by step into Whitman's spiritual world, and recollect with him the splendor, hesitation and tranquility in life.

"To the Indian Subcontinent" written by Hermann Hesse tells the story of Hermann Hesse, who has admired Eastern culture all his life and finally came to Asia. The steaming mainland of Southeast Asia. The mixed life of the colony made him marvel again and again. Hesse was in awe of the vastness of the primeval rainforest. He was also shocked by the picture of coolies working in the forest; he not only praised the Chinese, Indonesians, and Malays in Southeast Asia for not contracting modern Western diseases, but also despised their poor and blind imitation of European colonists. The ancient philosophy drawn from the literature is mixed with the experiences during travel, giving these travel essays a unique look and re-outlining the Eastern world in Hesse's eyes.

This journey started with a commuter subway, followed by a relay of various trains, including the "Lone Star" that spanned six states in the United States, the "Aztec Eagle" that revealed the decadence and sensuality of Mexico like a showcase, the mountain train that crossed the lofty mountains to Peru, and the "Pan Am" that crossed the national border and was more than a thousand miles long... Finally, the journey ended with the century-old Patagonia Express, which was as fast as an old cow. Paul Theroux traveled from Medford, Massachusetts, close to the big city of Boston, to the small town of Esquel in the Patagonian plateau of Argentina. On the steadily moving train, other people's terminal is his starting point, and the journey of dialogue with space begins.

The article "April Fool's Day" collects many real or fictitious characters throughout the ages. Lamb clarifies his preferred attitude towards "fools" in the article. The essay "Child in Dreams: A Fantasy" tells the past events of my grandmother, brother and early lover through the form of dreams. The classic essay "A Single Man Describes the Words and Deeds of a Married Person" has vivid language, a solemn and humorous mood, and a narrative close to life. In "On Roast Pig", a friend of Lamb introduced him to a Chinese manuscript about the origin of roast suckling pig. The article uses elegant and beautiful language to describe the entire process of selecting materials, making and enjoying it, giving the vulgar thing of roast pig an aesthetic perspective.

In this book, the three protagonists who were "in the same boat" on the Thames River began a bicycle trip in Germany. The book still describes Bummel's journey in a humorous tone. Because of the interesting introduction to German customs and customs at that time, this book has been used as a teaching material in German schools all year round. This book was published in 1900, when bicycles were popular among London's middle classes. The book introduces the bicycle brand competition, advertising, and bicycle enthusiasts' enthusiasm for equipment at that time. It still resonates when I read it today.

"Pillow" was written around 1001 and was the first of Japanese essay literature. The book has a total of 305 paragraphs, divided into three major contents: clustering, diary and random thoughts. The clustering is influenced by Li Yishan's "Za Tu" of the Tang Dynasty, which lists things of different natures and categories in life, such as "mountains", "sea", "disappointing things", "elegant things", involving geographical features, vegetation, flowers and birds, inner emotions, life interests, etc., Which very richly reflects the author's delicate observation and aesthetic taste of Qing Shao Nayan. The diary records the author's life in the palace, which reflects her deep relationship with Empress Fujiwara Teiko, as well as fragments of her life in the palace. This part of the content reflects the classical style, and allows us to understand the living conditions and tastes of the royal family and nobles in Japan's Heian period. Random thoughts are random thoughts about nature and life, especially the author's bright and free attitude towards life.

"I Can't Get Out of My Dark Night" is a diary of a visit during an illness and a meditation on aging, death and the relationship between mother and daughter. It chronicles Anne Ernault's ultimately futile attempts to help her mother recover from Alzheimer's disease, and the guilt, fear, frustration and reconciliation she felt during the caregiving process. "I can't get out of my dark night" were the last words written by the author's mother. In the moment when there was only "dark night", Ernault did not leave his mother with dementia and insisted on writing in pain. This book is the story of the author and his own mother, as well as the story of all daughters and mothers, as well as the story of people who are aging and dying.

Umberto Eco, the most dazzling Italian writer in the second half of the 20th century, left the world with literary thoughts, in-depth exploration of semiotics, dialectical thinking on philosophy, exploration of religious ethics, and detailed comments on literary works. "Making Enemies" is a "collection of occasional talks" by Umberto Eco. The book contains fifteen articles. The content spans ancient and modern times and travels to multiple worlds. As a travelogue, "On the Chinese Screen" records what Maugham saw, heard, thought and felt when he traveled to China around 1920, as well as the life scenes of some foreigners in China at that time. This book is accumulated from original writing materials. It is Maugham's fragmentary "sketches" of China in the 1920s. It presents China a hundred years ago in the eyes of the British writer, just like returning to the historical scene through a mirror. At the same time, the book includes precious photos taken by the American social economist and photographer Gamble when he lived in China. Combining pictures and texts, you can experience the Chinese customs in the eyes of foreigners a hundred years ago.

This is the first collection of nature essays published by John Burroughs. As W. D. Howells, editor-in-chief of "The Atlantic Monthly" at that time, said: "This is a book about birds written by a person who is familiar with and loves birds - it is not a dry list of bird categories, but vivid birds that are displayed in front of us. The picture. The twilight in the forest and the fresh and peaceful atmosphere make the readers of this book unable to extricate themselves. Reading it gives them a feeling of summer vacation. "For people living in a highly modern metropolis, reading this book is tantamount to a spiritual journey in nature."

In December 1831, Charles Darwin boarded the British naval ship HMS Beagle as "captain's companion" and began a five-year scientific expedition. This voyage is known as one of the most important voyages in human history. It was during this process that Darwin's "biological evolution" thought was born. In five years, Darwin crossed the Atlantic four times, visited the South American continent and surrounding islands, went deep into the South Pacific, and went to the Indian Ocean. He made detailed observations and records of various organisms, geological phenomena, folk customs, and local political systems along the way, and brought back a large number of precious specimens. During this voyage, Darwin began to think about the distribution and evolution of species, and the prototype of the theory of evolution was vaguely discernible. In a sense, "The Voyage of the Beagle" can be regarded as the preparation and foundation for "The Origin of Species", no wonder Darwin called it his "first academic child". During the voyage, Darwin fully revealed his profound philosophical thinking and profound literary skills. This makes "The Voyage of the Beagle" not only scientific but also literary, making it fascinating to read.

How did a family governed by inaction create a wise and interesting novelist? A Barnes-esque autobiography, candid, poignant and humorous. "Nothing to Fear" is an exploration of family memories and a recollection of the creative and ideological process. Reading this work, you can get a glimpse of the prototype of all of Barnes' classic works. "My brother questions the fundamental authenticity of memory, and I question the way we render memory." "Nothing to Fear" is Barnes's family memoir. It not only contains the conceptual confrontation between him and his brother, who is a professor of philosophy, but also an exploration of the family's past. It is not only a sorting and recollection of his thoughts on death and immortality, God and self, time and memory, but also a collective tribute to the writers and artists he admires. Although Barnes solemnly warns readers that "this is not my autobiography," this work still presents us with the ideological context of the author's creative career, from which we can clearly identify the shadows of all classic works such as "Flaubert's Parrot", "The Sense of the End", and "The Noise of Time".

"Stop Obsessed with Optimizing Life" If you are tired of still doing everything to your best and following a bunch of organizing magic and fasting methods in such an era, then don't miss this book that can inspire you to live a hedonistic life. "Rest is Not Shameful" Taking a break is like an insignificant gap, a gap in planned daily life, like a whim, sometimes unbearable. After all, it's what happens before and after that matters, isn't it? Rest itself is unworthy of our lack of attention and love. In fact, it is a real bag of surprises, a treasure trove full of meanings and connotations that give meaning to our existence. "What Happens When You Get Old" is a witty TO DO list, full of "good ideas" that make people laugh, for mature readers who are always optimistic or young readers who are full of curiosity. This book will tell you straightforwardly that life after the age of fifty is full of expectations. Andrea Gerk invites us to explore the many beautiful little things in life that can only be appreciated when we are mature enough: inviting all your exes over for dinner, discussing your illness endlessly, reciting a poem every day, letting young people explain the world to you, and even giving yourself an award for your life's work.

The sound of the river is mighty, the bells are ringing again... Romain Rolland has composed a majestic epic full of passion and vitality with the vast chapters of the ocean. "John Christophe" uses the life course of the protagonist Christophe to describe how a resolute soul defeats his inner enemies and moves from childishness to maturity; it also describes how a talented musician resists the hypocritical society and resists morbid art. It is not only an epic of Christophe's personal spirit, but also a musical epic, a portrayal of the spiritual journey of thousands of people, and an immortal classic that has inspired generations of people at home and abroad. As Romain Rolland himself said, it is the "spiritual testament" of an era.

This scene takes place in Troy. A group of proud Greek princes, full of anger, gathered their ships loaded with weapons for a fierce battle at the port of Athens; sixty-nine warriors wearing crowns set out from the Gulf of Athens to Phrygia; they swore to conquer Troas, because within the strong walls of Troas, Helen, the princess of Menelaus, who had lost her virginity, was sleeping in the arms of the romantic Paris: this was the cause of the war. When they arrived at Tenedos, they unloaded their armored soldiers from the huge ships; these Greeks, who had just entered the battlefield and had not yet faced the enemy, set up their mighty camp on the plain of Dardan.

Anne Frank (1929-1945) was a Jewish girl born in Frankfurt, Germany. An asteroid numbered 5535 was named "5535 Annefrank" after her. During World War II, the Nazis implemented anti-Jewish laws. In order to escape persecution, Anne hid in a secret room with her parents. Anne's family hid here for 25 months, during which Anne recorded every bit of life here in a diary - this was her thirteenth birthday gift. She wrote about the confusion of growing up in this special environment, her expectations for love, her fear of war and persecution, but more importantly, her enthusiasm and hope for life. Her courage and amazing perseverance can be seen between the lines. "The Diary of Anne Frank (full color translation)" became a witness to the extermination of the Jews by Nazi Germany during World War II. After Anne's family was arrested, the diary was discovered and preserved by Mape Gies. It was republished as "The Diary of Anne Frank" in 1952. It has been translated into multiple languages and adapted into numerous plays and movies.

We are watching, we are listening, we are feeling; we are laughing, we are distressed; occasionally there are days that we want to keep in our hearts and are difficult to replace. Maybe these are days when nothing happens; however, we are still waiting. We are waiting for something to come, or recalling the interesting things about light and shadow when we were young, or interpreting popular films in a unique way, or recording behind-the-scenes shots on the set. "Garbage Basket Cinema" may be the film utopia in Shunji Iwai's mind.

The random list lists various things in life, involving geographical features, vegetation, flowers and birds, life interests, etc., Reflecting Seishonagon's aesthetic taste; the diary records Seishonagon's life in the palace, from which we can understand the living conditions and tastes of the royal family and nobles in Japan's Heian period; the random thoughts are my casual feelings about nature and life, expressing a bright and free attitude towards life.

"I put some hard, heavy, and even violent things into literature. They are related to life situations, to the language of the world I lived in before I was eighteen years old, and to a world of workers and farmers. They are always real things. I think, in my Writing was the best thing I could do under the circumstances, as a class-spanner, as a political act and as a gift." For nearly a year, the writer Frédéric-Yves Genet peppered Anne Hernault with questions. In these responses, the author strives to provide an account of her writing practice that began thirty years ago, describing her working methods and explaining the "purpose" of her texts. This book is well worth reading and moving because it rejects fiction and does a rigorous, progressive work on lived experience. This book helps ordinary readers understand Erno's own experience and writing characteristics, and is also an important reference for literary researchers.

The work of global best-selling author x lifestyle leader x speaker Alain de Botton has a new preface specially written by de Botton for Chinese readers. Host Liu Xuan, cartoonist Ouyang Yingji, writers Zheng Huajuan and Lu Yujia jointly recommended it. The airport was originally just a transitional space during travel, where only "departures" and "arrivals" occurred. However, in the eyes of Alain de Botton, it has become a museum integrating various cultural aspects. One summer, Alain de Botton was invited to be the "first writer-in-residence" at Heathrow International Airport in the United Kingdom. He can get to know passengers from all over the world and interview all kinds of people, including security personnel, pilots, CEOs, and even airport chaplains; he can also enter and exit the departure hall, arrival hall, airport restricted area and airport hotel at will. In the familiar and mysterious "non-place" of the airport, De Botton uses his unique perspective to explore and observe the wonder and vulgarity... A week later, De Botton wrote this extraordinary cross-border cultural and creative work with his consistent writing style that combines humor and wisdom. He explores travel, work, relationships, and the nature of everyday life, showing us that spending time in an airport can be more enlightening than we give it credit for.

Part Two of Deborah Levy's Trilogy of Women's Growth: On Women and Family Life. It was named one of the "100 Best Works of the 21st Century" by The Guardian and won the 2020 French Femina Foreign Literature Prize. "Life falls apart. We try to control ourselves, to stay calm. Then we realize that we don't want to stay calm..." How much does it cost a woman to break old boundaries and gain a small role in a world that is stacked against her? This is the story of every woman in history-who created a home with their love and labor that ended up meeting the needs of everyone but themselves. In this short, emotional, and controversial documentary work, writer Levy not only candidly reviews the darkest moments of his life, including the breakdown of his marriage and the death of his mother, but also thinks about what is a meaningful, valuable, and fun life for women. She cites the works of artists or thinkers such as Simone de Beauvoir, James Baldwin, Elena Ferrante, Marguerite Duras, David Lynch and Emily Dickinson to outline what is the ultimate freedom in women's lives. Recommended by Li Yiyun and Janet Winterson, it is the desk book of Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman.

This book is Lawrence Block's only memoir. It is also a travelogue, an autobiography, and a "sporting adventure" that perhaps only a novelist can write. In this book, he tells his experience as a runner and walker. The book is divided into three parts, with a total of 31 chapters. He tells walking stories one by one using exquisite montage techniques, integrating the author's growth experience, writing career, characters in the book, and walking experience into a humorous, ironic, and stripped-down book of life, sharing his successes, failures, and trials with the world. Many of Bullock's most popular masterpieces were written during competitions that challenged physical limits. He also discovered that walking and writing are exactly the same: all you have to do is take turns moving forward with two legs, and the secret is to stay on the field and keep moving forward.

At the end of March 1845, Thoreau came to Walden Pond, started to build a cabin, and moved in on July 4, the American Independence Day. He also planted a small piece of land by the lake to maintain a minimum life. While observing the animals and plants in the forest, listening to the revelations of nature, he was engaged in reading and writing. Thoreau wrote "Walden" based on what he saw, heard and thought at Walden Pond. The manuscript was revised seven times in seven years. The first edition of the book was titled "Walden, or Life in the Woods." However, from the second edition onwards, the author only retained the title "Walden." "Walden" not only vividly describes the author's independent and leisurely life in the forest, but also contains introspection and criticism of the human value system at every turn, making people feel as if they have found a pure land of the soul after reading it, and their spirit has been sublimated. This book has been called one of the "Ten Wonderful Books That Shape the American Character."
