Sherlock Holmes (part 1)
General Fiction福尔摩斯探案集(上)
Arthur Conan Doyle
This book is the culmination of detective novels by Conan Doyle, the "father of British detective novels", and is also a popular work in the world's literary world. It includes "The Four Signs" and "A Study in Scarlet". "The Sign of Four" is the second full-length detective novel in the series. The work is based on the historical background of the Indian soldiers' rebellion, through people's desperate struggle for the King's Treasure Box, and the pursuit of pure love by Watson and Miss Morstan, who regard ill-gotten wealth as a barrier. "A Study in Scarlet" tells the story of two detectives who came to ask for help. A murder case occurred in a suburban villa. The victim fell in a pool of blood, but there were no wounds on his body. The word "Revenge" was left on the wall. To their surprise, there was a women's ring beside the deceased. Based on the information at the scene, Holmes deduced the general appearance of the murderer, and started with the women's ring to find the murderer. Another person was killed soon after, and the circumstances at the scene showed that the case was carefully designed by the murderer in order to enjoy the pleasure of revenge. With the help of the Bailey Street detective, the murderer Hope surfaced. The reason for all murders comes from one word: love. It turns out that Hope is from the western United States. Because his girlfriend was persecuted to death by the local Mormons, he went through all kinds of hardships and dangers to track the murderer and come to England to take revenge.

"The Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes" takes the experiences of detectives Sherlock Holmes and Watson as the main line, leading to a series of sensational and strange cases. The background of the story fully combines the political and economic situation in Britain at that time. Conan Doyle's creative writing style and narrative perspective have become increasingly sophisticated and changeable. Many people even thought that the story was real. In this novel, in addition to the thrilling and sensational detective stories, it also expresses the jealousy, suspicion, and hatred between people. A husband murders his wife, an uncle poisons his nephew for property, two brothers kill their sister, etc. These crimes fully demonstrate the ugliness of human nature.

There are three thick notebooks here, the stories all happened in 1894. It would be difficult for me to select from these stories some interesting ones which illustrate my friend's special talents. I read it from cover to cover, and found out that it included the horrific red leech case, the murder of banker Crosby, the Addleton tragedy, the disappearance of strange burial objects in British tombs, and the famous Smith-Mortime inheritance case. In these cases, Holmes was thanked by the French President and awarded the French Order of Merit for hunting down the murderer Horett on the Rue de Blois. Although these are good materials for writing stories, I think these are not as good as the case at Yorkshire's old house. There are many suspenseful storylines in it, such as the murder of young Willoughby Smith, which makes people shudder when they think about it.

The Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes·5
General Fiction福尔摩斯探案全集·5
Arthur Conan Doyle
In 1894, a case occurred in London that attracted the attention of all Londoners. The admirable Ronald Adair was murdered under inexplicable circumstances. The case occurred in the spring, and the upper class society was also shocked. Everyone knows the details of the case released by the police investigation, but in fact, many details have been deleted. The reason is that the grounds for prosecution are sufficient and there is no need to disclose all the evidence. Only now, almost ten years later, have I had the opportunity to fill in some of the missing links in the process of solving the case. This is an intriguing case, but the unexpected ending of the case is more important than the interestingness of the story. I have experienced many adventures in my life, and the outcome of this case shocked and surprised me the most. After all this time, I feel horrified just thinking about it, and reliving that feeling of joy, surprise, and disbelief that came over me like a tidal wave and completely overwhelmed my consciousness. Let me say a word to the public of readers who, I know, care about the fragments of words and deeds of a remarkable man whom I have occasionally spoken of, and I say this: Do not blame me for not letting them share all that I know, which I would have regarded as my first duty had he not personally forbidden me to do so. This ban was lifted on the 3rd of last month.

One day at the end of March 1892, it was cold and windy, and we were having lunch. Suddenly a telegram came from Holmes. He responded to someone casually, and then stood next to a stove. He didn't say a word, but kept reading the telegram. He was smoking a cigarette, with a straight face and a thoughtful look, as if something was wrong. He suddenly turned back to look at me, with a strange look in his eyes.

Shortly after I married, I bought a medical practice in Paddington from old Mr. Farquhar. The business of old Farquhar's clinic was very prosperous for a period of time, but due to his old age, poor energy, and suffering from a disease, the number of people coming to his clinic gradually decreased. This is because people naturally abide by a principle: a doctor must be healthy before he can cure a patient; if he cannot cure his own disease, people will naturally not believe in his medical skills. Therefore, the worse my senior's health, the less his income. When I bought the practice, his income had dropped from £1,200 a year to just over £300. However, I am quite confident in my vigorous body in my prime, and firmly believe that within a few years, the business of this clinic will be as prosperous as ever.

Whenever Anna Adler was mentioned, Holmes referred to her as "that" lady, as if she had no other name. The "that" lady in Holmes' mind is both talented and beautiful, and is the most outstanding of all women. However, this does not mean that Holmes has love for her, because Holmes is a very rigid and calm person. He is a machine used for the most sophisticated observation and reasoning in the world. It is really difficult for him to be a lover. He is not "cold" to emotions, especially love. His tone of voice was either sarcastic or sarcastic, and I had never heard him speak affectionately. To an observer, sweet talk can reveal a person's behavior and motivations, but to a trained expert in reasoning, such emotions distract him and interfere with his reasoning. The degree of interference is more serious than a precision instrument falling into sand or a high-power magnifying glass cracking. However, there was one woman, the only woman, the deceased Anna Adler, who left a hazy impression in his mind.

Before I could even arrive to report to the army, the Second Battle of Afghanistan broke out. Nevertheless, I followed the officers who had fallen behind like me, and on reaching Kandahar safely, I found my troops and immediately began my work.
