(Alternate Republican-era setting, Fengtian)

Xie Mingzhen grew up without a father or mother and never had enough to eat. Disguised as a boy, she did odd jobs at a martial arts school and ran errands for people, scraping by a miserable existence.
Then, by a twist of fate, the Miao family accepted her as their adopted daughter. She entered the Miao household and became the family's Sixth Miss, turning her fate around against all odds.
-
Miao Chun, the third young master of the wealthy Miao family, was handsome and well-read. Having returned from studying abroad, he was the envy of all, a shining example of a young gentleman.
His father was the only one who disliked him, and others even goaded his father into throwing him out. Once a refined young master, he fell gravely ill and ended up homeless, worse off than a beggar.
-
Back when Xie Mingzhen was still a starving street thug, she once stole something from Miao Chun. From then on, they were enemies, each wishing they could throttle the other.
Later, wrapped in an ill-fitting, round-collared jacket and skirt with wide sleeves, wearing dainty little leather shoes that pinched her feet, Xie Mingzhen was escorted into the dilapidated temple where Miao Chun was staying. When their eyes met from afar, they felt genuine sympathy for one another.

They had never lived in the same world.
And yet they had always lived in the same world.
