The moment Senior Brother got a recommendation for graduate school, he had the misfortune to get into a car accident. When he woke up, he found himself inside a cultivation novel he'd read, a story about a male protagonist who was destined for greatness.
The novel's protagonist, Long Aotian, joins the Sword Sect at seventeen. At twenty, he dazzles everyone in the sect's competition, and his extraordinary charisma draws countless followers. His path to immortality is full of challenges and twists.
But Senior Brother has transmigrated into an insignificant passerby, one of the "Senior Brother and the others were very surprised" extras briefly mentioned while watching the protagonist show off.
Now that there's no book left to read, Senior Brother decides to build himself a little nest here and focus on staying alive.
But Senior Brother underestimates just how much of a background character he is.
For instance, no one can hear him or respond to him, whether he speaks or not.
For instance, even if his group leaves him behind, no one notices.
For instance, the people he helps when he goes down the mountain never thank him...
They're even colder than NPCs in some MMOs. Senior Brother is thoroughly discouraged.
Senior Brother decides to give up and coast through life. At last, the day Long Aotian joins the sect arrives. All the brilliant stories in the book begin to unfold, revolving around this heaven's favorite.
One day, Senior Brother goes to watch his junior brothers and sisters fool around, as usual. He lies in a tree, dozing off amid the racket, when he suddenly hears someone speak to him. His brain stalls for a long time before he realizes the person is talking to him. He looks over slowly and sees Long Aotian, radiant among the crowd.
"Senior Brother, you dropped your sword."
This is Senior Brother's tenth year in this world. He feels his heart begin to beat again.
Long Aotian has always felt that he has little to regret in life. He has close friends who are like brothers, elders who dote on him, and decent talent of his own. Ascending to immortality is only a matter of time.
But fate has other plans. On the day he reaches the pinnacle of the Great Dao, he opens his eyes and finds himself back at seventeen, in the year he gave up his position as crown prince to pursue cultivation and joined the Sword Sect.
Everything is the same as in his previous life, except for that insignificant Senior Brother, who had been so ordinary and forgettable that he barely registered in Long Aotian's memories.
Senior Brother is always standing far away, cool and aloof, as if nothing interests him. The others don't seem to know him well, either. Strangely, however, this Senior Brother often appears near Long Aotian, sometimes in a pavilion, sometimes in a tree, silently watching him as if deep in thought.
Finally, one day, after Senior Brother's sword falls on his head, Long Aotian can't help but speak to him.
From then on, Long Aotian discovers that he is the only one who can communicate normally with Senior Brother.
In his journal, he writes about Senior Brother and calls him a treasure.
Later, Senior Brother's soul lamp goes out. Long Aotian never understands why no one remembers that he already has a Dao companion. Instead, they think he has gone mad. He explains again and again, patiently: "My Dao companion and I became partners when we were young. He is my Senior Brother."
He had the best wife in the world, so why does no one know?
A hundred years after Senior Brother's departure, the demonized Long Aotian tears out the page in his journal where he wrote "treasure" and quietly watches its edges curl in the candlelight.
