One second, Jiang Ke was killing zombies. The next, she had transmigrated to the year 3023. All animals had taken human form, and anyone without a job would be destroyed.
The good news: Jiang Ke was a Border Collie with a noble bloodline.
The next second, the System announced: [Available career: Comfort Dog.]
Jiang Ke tearfully started work.
At first, it was easy.
But soon, things started getting weird.
In the first week, a cat with a unicorn horn became a regular visitor.
His entire body was snow-white, his eyes were different colors, and the moment he came in, he pounced on Jiang Ke and pinned her to the sofa.
His barbed tongue licked from her collarbone all the way to her earlobe.
Jiang Ke went weak all over, but he pressed close to her ear and squawked twice, then wrapped his tail around her waist and pulled her into his arms.
In the second week, a brown fox appeared.
He was a head taller than the unicorn cat, and his eyes tilted up at the corners when he smiled.
The first thing he did when he came in was yank Jiang Ke out of the cat's arms, pin her against the wall, and kiss her.
His kiss slid from the corner of her mouth to her jaw, then to the side of her neck, before he finally took her throat between his lips and sucked gently.
Jiang Ke's legs went weak. Taking advantage of the moment, the fox's tail curled around her thigh, its fluffy tip slipping beneath her skirt.
“Your tail... moved on its own again?” Jiang Ke panted.
The fox licked his lips. “Mm. It likes you a lot.”
In the third week, a tulip bloomed.
The moment he spoke, the cup fell from Jiang Ke's hand. His voice was exactly like that of her dead zombie ex-boyfriend.
On a stormy night, he crawled out of the flowerpot. His translucent body pressed down on Jiang Ke, and though his fingers couldn't touch her, his cold breath traced the shape of her lips.
“Didn't you die?” Jiang Ke's voice trembled.
“I did.” He lowered his head, his transparent lips against her carotid artery. “Then I crawled back. This time, I'm not going anywhere.”
Jiang Ke sat in a daze in the counseling room. The doctor said she was having hallucinations and recommended that she adopt an emotional-support dog.
She turned to look at the clinic doorway.
The unicorn cat was pressed against the glass, licking the window and leaving wet streaks behind.
The fox leaned against the wall, his tail slowly rubbing his thigh as he stared fixedly at her.
The tulip's translucent body clung to the crack in the door, its breath fogging the glass.
“Doctor, they're right outside.”
The doctor smiled and greeted them. “Miss Jiang, they're your guests.”
As soon as the words left his mouth, the three presences outside the door all turned scorching hot.
A month later, the doctor came for a follow-up and opened the door.
Jiang Ke was squeezed onto the sofa between three men.
The unicorn cat bit the skin on the back of her neck, making muffled squawking sounds.
The fox buried his face against her chest, his tail already between her thighs.
The tulip held her wrist and licked each of her fingers, one by one: between them, the tips, the bases, not missing a single spot.
Jiang Ke sat dazed between them, tears still clinging to her lashes, but with a smile on her lips.
The doctor pushed up his glasses. “It looks like Miss Jiang doesn't need me anymore. So... do you still need a comfort dog?”
