On the first day Wen Tang moved into her new apartment, she ran into her neighbor in the elevator.
The man wore dark lounge clothes and held a bag of trash. His expression was as cold as if he'd just stepped out of a freezer. She smiled politely, but he didn't even glance at her. He pressed B1 and turned away.
Great.
Wen Tang thought this was exactly what she'd always expected from the elite.
Cold, distant, and unapproachable.
They met for the second time in the emergency room.
Her internship supervisor led her over to a man in a white coat. "Shen Yan, cardiology. This is Wen Tang, our new intern. Please show her the ropes."
The man looked up, revealing the same cool features she'd seen in the elevator.
"You?" Wen Tang blurted out.
Shen Yan's gaze lingered on her face for a fraction of a second. Then he opened a patient chart and said in a businesslike tone, "Your first lesson in the emergency department rotation: from now on, you'll follow me."
Wen Tang thought she was in for two long, grueling months.
What she didn't expect was this.
After she worked a night shift and got a stomachache from hunger, a container of lukewarm millet porridge appeared on her desk the next day. The takeout order was under "Mr. Shen," with the note, "Don't let it get cold before you drink it."
After a patient's unreasonable family member yelled at her and made her cry, she hid in the stairwell to wipe away her tears. Shen Yan appeared from who knew where and handed her a packet of tissues. "Finish crying, then come in. I'll teach you how to write progress notes."
She casually mentioned that the hospital coffee tasted awful. The next day, a box of pour-over coffee bags appeared in the break room cabinet. It was the same brand she'd posted about on her social media.
Wen Tang finally couldn't take it anymore. One late night after working overtime, she stopped him. "Dr. Shen, what exactly are you trying to say?"
Shen Yan leaned against the hallway wall, still wearing his white coat, a little of his collarbone showing at the neckline. He looked at her, something shifting in his eyes, but his voice remained as indifferent as ever.
"I thought everyone knew," he said. "I like you."
After a pause, he added, "I just don't know if you like me."
At that moment, the motion-sensor light at the end of the hallway went out.
Only the moonlight fell on his face and the tips of his ears, faintly flushed red.
Wen Tang suddenly thought this man was a hundred times more adorable than she'd imagined.
[Bonus Scene]
One day after they got together, Wen Tang was looking through Shen Yan's phone photos when she found a locked folder. The password was her birthday.
Inside were nothing but pictures of her.
They weren't secretly taken, but openly snapped: her gnawing on a chicken leg in the cafeteria, dozing with her head on her desk at the office, touching up her lipstick in the elevator mirror...
The earliest one was dated three days after she moved into the apartment.
"You liked me back then?" Wen Tang's eyes went wide.
Shen Yan calmly turned a page in a medical journal. "Mm-hmm."
"...Then why did you ignore me the first time we met in the elevator?"
"I was nervous."
Wen Tang: "???"
Nervous???
