Zhu Yu was about to be sold by his own father in exchange for food. With only a slim chance of survival, he had to flee with his younger brother, following the refugees south to Qiongzhou Island. Just as they were about to die on the road, a fierce-looking man named Qin Feng came to their rescue.
Everyone in the village said Qin Feng was a ruthless man. If a ge’er or woman married him, he could beat them to death with one punch!
They also said Qin Feng was poor, and his whole family couldn’t afford a single new set of clothes. Anyone who married him would be a fool!
But Zhu Yu was taken with Qin Feng’s tall, sturdy build. He and his younger brother were both young ge’er, and if they wanted to settle down safely in the village, he needed to find a tough man.
The first thing he did after washing his face was tell Qin Feng, “I can marry you and be your husband.”
Qin Feng looked him over. “I’m already twenty-four, and you’re only seventeen. You’re too young! We’re not a good match.”
Zhu Yu pouted. “Ge’er can marry at sixteen. Don’t you believe I can be your husband?”
Qin Feng didn’t agree, but he couldn’t resist Zhu Yu’s persistence, and the two got married.
The villagers all waited to laugh at them. Could this old man and young ge’er really build a good life together? Zhu Yu was so young and beautiful, and Qin Feng was so poor. Would Zhu Yu really be content?
Zhu Yu paid no attention to the gossip. He worked with Qin Feng to farm and clear land in the village, growing vegetables, rice, and fruit trees around the house. He went up the mountain to pick fruit and herbs: wild lychees, wampees, longans, sour jujubes... He gathered them all. He combed the shore for seafood, collecting clams, razor clams, oysters, shrimp, and crabs... They all ended up on the table.
As life got better and better, his feelings for Qin Feng deepened, too.
He tapped the man’s solid chest in bed.
“Well? Am I suited to be your husband?”
Qin Feng pulled him into his arms, biting the red mole on his earlobe as he mumbled,
“Yuge’er, come once more, and then I’ll answer you.”
* They do not consummate the marriage until the shou is over eighteen!
* No court politics, just a pure farming story about ordinary people! A little childbirth, too~

[Shou-centric famine-escape farming story] The Famine-Struck Brother, but with a Supermarket. Please add it to your reading list! Here’s the blurb:
Zhou Qing was reborn in the body of a ge’er who had just starved to death. The moment he opened his eyes:
His father and mother were nowhere to be found. His second younger brother, delirious with hunger, was eating clay. His uncle’s husband had bitten his finger to give blood to the starving baby, while his eldest brother lay unconscious after fighting someone over water.
His uncle’s husband wept. “We have no food left. Let’s all just wait to die together...”
Zhou Qing: Hold on! The little supermarket I ran in my previous life is still here. Nobody’s dying. You’re all going to live!
His family no longer had to fight over water in muddy ditches. Zhou Qing gave them Nongfu Spring water every day. They kept the empty bottles as precious treasures and sold them to the townspeople in exchange for rice and flour.
*
The drought had yet to end when locusts arrived. They also heard that there were rebellions everywhere, and government forces and rebel troops were rounding people up as conscripts day after day. Corpses covered the land. The Zhou family had no choice but to flee as a whole!
On the road, Zhou Qing found a pale scholar who was nearly dead from illness. The scholar claimed he had lost his memory, but could work, write, and keep a bed warm. Zhou Qing thought he was so handsome that he took him in.
When someone got sick, there was a medicine kit in the supermarket. When they were hungry, there was rice and flour. When they were cold, there were raincoats and sweaters. And if bandits showed up, there were gleaming kitchen knives and saws.
Zhou Qing became the backbone of the Zhou family, and a long line of people gradually formed behind them as the family fled. After countless hardships, they found a beautiful place with clear streams and lush mountains and established a new village. The first thing the Zhou family did was arrange a wedding for Zhou Qing and the scholar, Wu Zhibai.
Zhou Qing: Wonderful! At last, the farming life of my dreams is about to begin!
*
On their wedding night, Wu Zhibai regained his memories. It turned out he was a prince who had fled the imperial palace.
Wu Zhibai clasped Zhou Qing’s hand and rubbed it. “Qingge’er, wait for me three more years. I’ll come marry you after I’ve brought peace to the land!”
Zhou Qing grabbed him. “Wait, take me with you!”
The little supermarket that had saved the Zhou family at first later became a treasure that helped the whole world go without famine.
* A little childbirth
* Mostly famine-escape farming, with a little infrastructure building
