[Key points: Goofy, sweet romance, absurd comedy, both untouched, happy ending. Please add it to your collection!]
One of Shen Jiamu's life principles: Never trust fortune-tellers on the street.
Until the fortune-teller, an ethereal-looking gentleman, correctly tells him his name, reveals the embarrassing fact that he was scolded for being late that morning, and says that a malicious person is causing trouble for him. If he doesn't deal with it, he'll suffer a bloody disaster. Shen Jiamu believes him.
He transfers 1,999 yuan with tears in his eyes and gets a heavenly book that's supposedly able to ward off misfortune and disaster.
The fortune-teller repeatedly warns him never to look at the last page.
At midnight, tired from reading the heavenly book, Shen Jiamu gives in to curiosity and opens the last page.
His pupils shrink. At the very bottom of the last page, it clearly says: Retail price: 20 yuan.
Shen Jiamu throws the book to the ground. "...You son of a..."
The next day, he fails to get revenge. On his way home, he runs into someone trying to stage an accident.
Shen Jiamu clenches his fists and points at the camera, sneering. "You're pulling this scam here? There's a camera right above us!"
The person on the ground takes off his glasses and grins. "I checked already. That camera's broken."
Shen Jiamu is about to leave, then realizes that the man lying on the ground is the fortune-telling scammer from yesterday!
Just as Shen Jiamu is about to settle both old and new scores, the scammer refuses to admit anything, insisting he has a twin brother and that it must have been his brother who cheated Shen Jiamu.
Furious, Shen Jiamu goes for him, only to get caught in the scammer's trap instead. "My apprentice's recording! If you don't pay up, I'll ruin you online!" he shouts, then yells, "Cheng Yan, get out here and save your master!"
Cheng Yan slowly walks over from nearby, but every word he says throws his master under the bus. "Such shameless behavior deserves a beating. This gentleman, on the other hand, is truly upright!"
Cheng Yan not only helps Shen Jiamu get his money back, but also watches him leave.
Cheng Ruiqing rubs his face. "You ungrateful apprentice! You dared use a silence talisman on me?! Had two decent meals and now you think you're something, huh? We didn't get the money, and now I've even had to cough up what I got yesterday!"
Cheng Yan gazes fervently at Shen Jiamu's retreating figure. "Master, do you believe in love at first sight? I don't think we need to keep looking. He must be my Dao companion."
[Bonus scene:]
Cheng Ruiqing gives him pointers while drumming the rules into his head. "Apprentice, remember, we're only allowed to be the one on top!"
Cheng Yan nods. "I understand, Master. I'll climb over the wall right now and take him down!"
Cheng Ruiqing: "Wait, you're a Daoist, not a thug!"
Shen Jiamu: "...I'm straight!"
It isn't until Cheng Yan is badly injured saving Shen Jiamu and the two shamelessly move into his home that Shen Jiamu finally gets it: one of the master-and-apprentice pair scams people out of money, and the other scams them out of their hearts! The worst part is, he seems to be... turning gay!
Theme: Move forward bravely and never bow to fate.
