Reunited after a long separation | Rekindled love | The proud, gifted one bows to love
1.
On a rainy evening in Suyun Town, Xiang Yunsheng picked up her laptop and ducked into a guesthouse to escape the rain. She gazed toward the hotel she'd booked at the end of the alley, wondering whether she could make a dash for it
"Looking for a room?"
A lazy voice came from the stairs. A man stood in the dusk, wearing a windbreaker with a stiff, high collar that hid most of his face.
He strolled to the front desk, braced one hand on the counter, and slumped into the lounge chair.
Warm light fell across a pair of eyes, with inner and outer corners that swept upward and outer corners that drooped slightly, their irises holding a pool of honey warmed by the fire.
The moment their eyes met, the rain from the eaves stopped falling.
Xiang Yunsheng froze, unsure whether to explain.
But Chi Yang had already turned away with an impassive face. He rapped the counter with a knuckle and said coldly, "ID."

That evening, the guesthouse hosted a barbecue. The guests and owner crowded into the courtyard.
Someone teased Chi Yang: "Brother Chi, you're the only one who's ever dumped people, from childhood to now, right?"
"Not exactly." Chi Yang lounged in a wicker chair, a can of beer in his hand. He lazily lifted his eyes. "I've been dumped."
His words caused an uproar around the table. With a face like that and such a privileged family, who'd be stupid enough to dump him?
Under everyone's eager gaze, Chi Yang looked through the curling smoke toward the person quietly grilling skewers in the corner. With a casual laugh, he said:
"I was young and foolish. Someone fooled me."
Xiang Yunsheng's hand paused. Oil dripped from the skewers onto the coals, sending up a tiny spark. She suddenly remembered the stubborn eyes of the boy on that rainy night.
Back then, she had hurled all the harsh words she had ever held inside at Chi Yang, pretending they were spiteful when they were really heartfelt.
The boy who had always thought himself invincible stared after her with red-rimmed eyes, his fringe soaked through, and murmured:
"Xiang Yunsheng, you're a liar."

On her last night in Suyun Town, Xiang Yunsheng packed her things, planning to leave at dawn.
But before she could even leave the guesthouse, someone blocked her in the hallway.
Chi Yang pressed one hand on the handle of her suitcase, a mocking curve on his lips. "I thought you'd only pull that disappearing-without-a-word trick once."
Xiang Yunsheng pressed her lips together and ventured, "Then... goodbye?"
If she said goodbye, it wouldn't count as disappearing without a word, right?
Chi Yang fell silent for a moment, then gave a mocking laugh. "Do I look that easy to fool?"
The morning breeze swayed the dim light of the lantern under the eaves into his eyes, revealing a thin, bone-deep chill.
Xiang Yunsheng didn't dare look at him for long. The moment he let go, she seized her suitcase and headed out.
But suddenly, a hand clamped around her wrist.
Her back collided with his chest. The cold zipper dug into her shoulder blade, and Chi Yang's breath, low and hot, brushed her ear bit by bit.
"Then fool me one more time, okay?"
