The Celestial Pivot Master, Cui Yan, emerged from seclusion after three hundred years.
His wide sleeves billowed as he hovered in midair with his hands behind his back, looking down over the modern metropolis bustling below. A rare trace of confusion appeared on his cool, handsome face.
His disciples hurried over. "My lord, times have changed!"
Fortunately, the Alliance of Cultivators had a well-established plan for dealing with the occasional reappearance of their old ancestors.
So Cui Yan and the other old-timers who couldn't keep up with the times were packed off to the local university for seniors.
Learn new ideas and become a fine new... senior citizen.
All they had to do was earn twenty credits to graduate.
His disciple thought they were in the clear: his master was a once-in-a-generation genius, one of the leading immortals. Back in the day, there wasn't a formation he couldn't solve or a mystical art he couldn't break. Surely earning a mere twenty credits would be a breeze.
The next day, he got a call from the student advisor, complaining:
...He keeps whispering to Shufen and Jianguo next door. When I call on him, he pretends to be hard of hearing and says, "Huh? Can't hear you!"
He's also spreading feudal superstition to his classmates, going on about the art of divination and the five elements and trigrams... He claims his fortune-telling is spot-on and offers to tell fortunes in exchange for homework answers!
He sneaks food in class and is really good at hiding it. The whole classroom can smell it, but no one can find where it's coming from!
As the advisor poured out this tearful complaint, Cui Yan sat up straight, looking completely righteous and every bit the immortal.
His disciple looked ready to cry. "Master, the advisor says I have to attend a parent-teacher meeting for a remedial student next week..."
His immortal, aloof, otherworldly master glanced at him calmly, three words written plainly in his eyes:
So what?
At eleven hundred years old, he's right at the rebellious age.

Cui Yan was born with little passion or desire and disliked socializing. The only person he could call a close friend was Su Chi.
Su Chi's true form was a huge fox with a coat of fluffy, fiery-red fur. He knew Cui Yan had a secret preference:
He loved big, fluffy tails.
There was no creature in the world more suited to Cui Yan's taste than a nine-tailed fox.
Propriety kept Cui Yan from burying his face in his dear friend's beautiful tail fur, so he merely stroked it gently.
Su Chi propped his chin on his hand and smiled at him. "A Yan, do you know what someone in our relationship should call me in modern society?"
Cui Yan asked sincerely, "What?"
Su Chi leaned in to a dangerously close distance, his bewitching smile growing more captivating. "Hubby."
Cui Yan repeated with a serious expression, "Hubby."
After a moment of silence, the fox spirit, the oldest and most powerful of his kind, blushed at the ears and looked away first.
A few days later, another complaint call came from the advisor, who was completely losing it:
Are we just going to let this old geezer sneak out of class to go have a late-life romance or what?!
Nothing beats a romance in the golden years~
