[Blurb]
Sun Jiahui had lived with her grandfather in the back courtyard of the Ji family home since she was little. Before she was old enough to understand what it meant to live under someone else's roof, her grandfather brought home the Ji family's cold-faced young master one day and said he would be staying there for a while.
The boy was handsome and clean-cut, but had an unruly air about him.
Sun Jiahui didn't know why Ji Fanye would choose to squeeze into these three old rooms with her instead of staying in the beautiful, luxurious front courtyard.
But she knew that a new "lady of the house" had recently arrived in the front courtyard, bringing with her two children about the same age as Ji Fanye.

Ji Fanye stayed in the back courtyard for ten whole years.
At first, Sun Jiahui took care of him because, like her, he had no parents, and because her grandfather had asked her to look after him.
Whether he woke from a nightmare in the middle of the night or someone said something cruel to him, she was always there to protect and comfort him.
But Ji Fanye's heart was like an iceberg that would never melt. He was always cold and indifferent toward her.
Sun Jiahui felt hurt.
He clearly didn't want her around, so she had no reason to keep throwing herself at him.
And so she started deliberately keeping her distance.
Ji Fanye didn't change. He just often stared straight at her for a long, long time until she noticed, then went back to his room and shut the door.
Sun Jiahui thought he was strange and impossible to cure, and stopped paying him any attention.
She had no idea what Ji Fanye was doing behind that old, paper-thin wooden door: how hard he was struggling to hold himself back, or how he found relief.
He felt something strange and vibrant growing wildly in his chest... possessiveness.
Once his jealousy had reached its limit,
behind the shabby wooden door, eighteen-year-old Ji Fanye pinned Sun Jiahui against it several times.
"What is wrong with you?"
"Hui Bao, I want to kiss you."
She stared straight into his bloodshot eyes and listened to his suppressed, breathless panting.
After a moment...
"And then what, after you kiss me?"
"Hui Bao, let's run away together."
Sun Jiahui straightened her collar, glared at him, and pushed him away. "You're sick."
Ji Fanye didn't get mad when she insulted him. He even enjoyed it, thinking he must be ridiculously twisted. The more she scolded him, the more he felt she treated him specially, because she loved him so much.
So he was lost in this feeling year after year, until the summer after the college entrance exam, when Sun Jiahui tricked him onto a flight overseas and helped him get settled there, only to abandon him the very next day.
No matter how humbly he begged her to come back, she never turned around.
She didn't even offer an explanation.

In a sparsely furnished rental apartment, twenty-five-year-old Ji Fanye maliciously pinned Sun Jiahui to the bed.
A clear, bright-red handprint stood out on his left cheek.
"What is wrong with you again?"
"Hui Bao, I want to sleep with you."
Sun Jiahui couldn't push him away, so she simply turned her face and stopped meeting his eyes. She was actually afraid to look at him.
"Was that slap not painful enough?"
It hurt. It hurt plenty.
She'd only kissed him once, and she'd hit him pretty hard.
But compared to all the pain he'd suffered because of her over the past few years, it really wasn't enough.
"And then what, after we sleep together?"
"Hui Bao, I want an explanation."
//When I met you, flowers bloomed across the green fields.//
