Duan Yu has been a lonely wandering spirit for millions of years. He doesn't know where he came from or where he is supposed to go.
Until one day, the Heavenly Dao finds him and says, "Spend one lifetime traveling through the mortal world, and you can reincarnate and cultivate anew. How does that sound?"
Duan Yu agrees. He doesn't care much about reincarnating and cultivating anew; he's simply been here for far too long... far too long...
In this life, he is born into a prestigious family and blessed with extraordinary talent. With only casual cultivation, he reaches the pinnacle of the age.
The world is full of rare treasures, and beautiful people are everywhere, yet none can catch his eye.
He has lived too long. He has seen far too much of all this already.
Yet everyone adores him for his uncompetitive, unassuming nature.
So, while still young, Duan Yu is granted a throne and the title of Grand Tutor. Even with power in his hands, he remains perfectly calm.
In everyone's eyes, this makes him indifferent to fame and fortune, unruffled by praise or disgrace. Before long, Duan Yu is even more adored.
One lifetime is no more than a fleeting moment in Duan Yu's long existence, yet he still feels exhausted.
Being human is much more tiring than being a ghost.
If only this life could end sooner...
So, on the day foreign races descend upon the world, Duan Yu stands alone before everyone and dies to save the world.
In a daze, he closes his eyes, thinking only that it is finally over.
Just before his consciousness sinks into a deep sleep, he feels himself fall into a familiar, warm embrace. It seems to be his dubious disciple...
[Bonus Scene]
When he opens his eyes again, Duan Yu finds himself in the Hall of the Heavenly Dao.
The place is filled with the power of countless laws, sacred and majestic. He had once only glimpsed it from afar.
He tries to sit up, only to discover that he is bound by chains formed from the Heavenly Dao's laws.
"I went to all that trouble to bring you back to life, not so you could abandon me for all living beings, Teacher."
The sacred, majestic voice carries a hint of grievance. Its owner is obvious. Duan Yu looks up and sees that the Heavenly Dao's incarnation has exactly the same face as his dubious disciple!
