When a palm strike landed on Ming Yu's face along with a scrutinizing gaze, she finally realized that she had transmigrated into a book.
She had transmigrated without inheriting any of the original owner's memories, but she had inherited her marriage arrangement.
"Though Lord Wang, the Vice Censor-in-Chief, is twenty years older than you, marrying him would still be a good thing for you. Becoming his concubine isn't out of the question. Are you going to marry him or not?" Ming Yu's father demanded sternly of the utterly unrepentant woman before him.
Ming Yu's inner monologue: Twenty years older? Become a concubine?
She had encountered one of those familiar plot devices from novels. Of course, she was going to... She raised her head and declared resolutely, "I won't marry him!"
Then she was "exiled" to a place called the Ming family estate, which was really a remote, impoverished backwater.
On her first day in the village, Ming Yu was frightened by a snake, chased by bees, and had a spiderweb plastered across her face...
On the second day, ravenous with hunger, she could no longer stand it and went out to forage for wild plants to eat.
She couldn't stay trapped in a miserable plot forever. Since she had transmigrated, she was going to follow the satisfying success-story route.
As a university student, Ming Yu was well versed in current market trends and plot conventions, so she worked hard to find opportunities.
Sigh, she really was lucky. She met the original novel's heroine. But she only remembered the heroine's name, not the plot!
Heaven was always messing with her. This had to be a setup for her to face-slap everyone later. Never mind that, she would make money first.
A year later, the new generation's wealthy merchant, Ming Yu, made her spectacular debut. She rubbed her hands together and headed for the capital.
Not one of the people who had bullied her in the past was going to get away.
"What about me? Why don't I get a part in this?" the original heroine asked when she heard Ming Yu's plans to return to the capital.
"You do, you do. Your part comes later," Ming Yu said with a smile.
They arrived in the capital without a hitch. In the middle of the night, a strong evening breeze blew open the window of Ming Yu's luxurious private room. Someone stood outside, gazing at her with a deep, intense look.
Ming Yu had been about to close the window, but paused. "Lord Meng, what are you doing here?"
Meng Xiuzhu asked in a deep voice, "What about me?"
"What about you?" Ming Yu blurted out. A second later, she realized something was off and remembered what they had said in the carriage that day. She smiled. "You? Your part starts tomorrow. Be ready, Lord Meng."
Meng Xiuzhu happily retraced his steps, looking forward to meeting the family.
Ming Yu was looking forward to it too, eagerly anticipating the chance to face-slap everyone when she returned home the next day.
