A handsome merman husband and a fisherwoman who gathers seafood at low tide, a short, sweet story
Wei Chao came across a merfolk while gathering seafood at low tide.
His tail, so blue it was almost purple, shimmered in the seawater, more radiant and beautiful than any creature she had ever seen in the sea.
Wei Chao took him home.
He had a face so beautiful it was impossible to tell whether he was male or female. When he opened his eyes and looked at her, Wei Chao felt as though the ocean itself were gazing at her.
She had planned to keep him for a while, admire his beauty, and sell him to a cultivator for money once she got tired of looking at him.
But he couldn't speak.
Wei Chao immediately wanted to sell him. Raising a mute was no fun.
When she told the merfolk to his face that she was going to sell him, his lashes trembled, and a glistening tear fell and turned into a milky-white pearl. He held it out to her.
Wei Chao's eyes lit up. "You can cry pearls!"
Wei Chao married the merfolk and claimed him as her own, bullying him every night until he cried pearls.
At first, he only bit his lip and kept quiet. Then, one day, a soft, sweet moan escaped his throat.
Wei Chao grew excited. "You can talk!"
She loved the sound of the merfolk's voice, so she made him sing to her every night.
From then on, Wei Chao enjoyed a wonderful life: fishing at sea by day, and listening to her husband sing and teasing him until he cried pearls at night.
But later, sea monsters attacked the town, cutting off its water supply and leaving countless people to die of thirst. If Wei Chao wanted to survive, she had no choice but to push the man out to them.
He gazed at her in silence as pearls threatened to blanket the parched earth.
Wei Chao handed him over to the monsters.
Wei Chao thought she would never see her pearl-crying husband again.
She kept gathering seafood at low tide, day after day. Three years later, she saw him again in the very same place.
But he had become terribly cold, as if he were a different person.
She called in a cultivator, who said her husband might have been possessed.
Wei Chao thought it over and decided to throw away her possessed husband.
She liked the one who cried pearls and sang. She didn't like the cold one.
[Little Brother's Diary]
That day, Big Sis went to the beach to cast a net for fish and brought a man home.
The man was really handsome. I sneaked a question to Big Sis, asking if he was my brother-in-law.
Big Sis smiled and nodded. She said he was.
I was so happy. I thought our family finally had a grown man older than me.
But not long after Big Sis married my brother-in-law, I got up in the middle of the night and heard crying coming from her room.
Afraid Big Sis was being bullied, I pushed open the door, only to see her holding a bloodstained dagger, with countless sparkling pearls scattered across the floor.
When Big Sis saw me, she smiled.
"Look at all these pearls. Our family will be rich from now on."
I looked at my brother-in-law, lying in Big Sis's arms with pearls falling from his eyes, then at the pearls scattered across the floor.
In the end, I closed the door and helped Big Sis pick up the pearls.
[One-on-one, both leads are virgins, happy ending
The male lead wasn't possessed. He was just so heartbroken after the female lead callously abandoned him that he pretended to be. Don't worry, he can't keep it up for more than three seconds before he starts crying pearls.
The little brother's diary was the original blurb. I couldn't bear to delete it, so I left it in.]
