A Two-Kilometer Journey

People live only a handful of moments, and this story tells just one of them.

Just before getting out of the car, she rummaged in her bag and pulled out a postcard, with a commemorative stamp she'd added on the back. She handed it to him, and he took it. She said, "I don't know if you've ever been to Budapest. I brought this back from my trip last month. I don't have anything else interesting with me, so I hope you don't mind. Thanks for bringing me home."

"How many times have you said 'thanks' now?"

They both laughed at the same time. As she unfastened her seat belt, he took a pen from beneath the dashboard, his Adam's apple bobbing. He held the pen and postcard out to her. "If you're really grateful, write down your phone number."

It doesn't matter whether it ends happily or sadly. It's just a moment in the lives of two people who meet.
