There is a kind of gong in this world.
Proud and arrogant, heaven's favored children, incapable of understanding love. Some are cold and haughty, others cruel and unrestrained. They are darlings of the Heavenly Dao, and they boss around the shou who approach them, sincerely offering up their love and enduring everything just to stay by their side. They never treasure their feelings.
They are affectionately known as:
The scumbag gong who gets chased into the crematorium.
When the shou grows disillusioned, unable to keep giving without getting anything back, and turns to leave, these scumbag gongs, accustomed to having them around, will instantly realize their mistake, no matter how much they despised or ignored them the second before. Their personas collapse in a flash, and they go from arrogant, coldhearted scumbags to shameless, doting lapdogs, desperately chasing after their wives.
And people will say:
[Baby, kick that scumbag to the curb. We don't need him.]
[Kiss kiss, baby. Torture that gong to death.]
[Heehee, that's what you get for treating your wife so badly. I'm taking him home.]
What is wrong with you people? My persona already collapsed!
One second, he was completely out of love. The next, all it took was the shou saying he was disillusioned and leaving for him to instantly lose his mind, turn into a lapdog and a legendary punching bag. You'd never guess he was once the proud darling of the heavens.
And the shou, who used to love him devotedly and could never be driven away, no matter what, suddenly does a complete reversal. He flirts and tussles with the second male lead just to watch the gong go crazy chasing after him. He's cold and resistant, with none of that humble, adoring love in his eyes anymore. He tells him to get lost again and again, and the gong keeps coming back for more.
So the scumbag gong decides:
He's not chasing his wife into the crematorium anymore.
Let's both go our own way.
[World One: Aristocratic young master gong, forced into the palace and taken by force x Madly lovesick, obsessive, gloomy ghost-king shou]
The tyrant Shen Fenyun fell in love at first sight with the young master in red, galloping on horseback and singing as he rode, free-spirited and proud.
The youth had a bright smile and handsome features, wild and unrestrained. His ink-black hair tied in a ponytail was brimming with youthful vigor.
When he smiled at Shen Fenyun, the tips of his tiger teeth gleamed white and bright, making his heart burn and tremble.
Disregarding the youth's wishes, Shen Fenyun abducted him into the palace and made him empress, lavishing him with affection. Though he was emperor, he washed his hands and cooked for him every day, showered him with countless gifts, and humbly begged for his love at his feet. If the youth wanted stars, he'd give him stars; if he wanted the moon, he'd give him the moon. But he alone would not give him freedom.
He endured the youth's burning hatred and loathing, his repeated acts of insolence and overstepping, his anger as he knocked over the meals Shen Fenyun had made for him, and his cold, cutting words.
Until the youth reached into the affairs of court. Shen Fenyun was ambushed and wounded, his life hanging by a thread. The youth was as arrogant and hateful as ever, speaking to him coldly and conspiring with the rebels.
His numb, aching chest throbbed again and again, until at last he could no longer feel the pain. The tyrant finally felt a weariness surging through him.
He turned and left.
And then the youth thought:
Holy crap, that lunatic is finally sick of me. Thank heaven!
The youth packed his things and fled for good.
He was loved by so many. He was an aristocratic son, a darling of the heavens, with a brilliant future ahead of him. His father doted on him, his mother cherished him, and he had countless admirers in the capital. Dressed in finery and riding fine horses, he was a bright, spirited young man, free to live as he pleased.
Who would want to have their freedom and dignity shackled, imprisoned in the depths of the palace as the male consort of a gloomy, deranged tyrant, bearing the infamy of a calamity-causing ruler and being cursed in the history books for the rest of their life?
He wasn't chasing his wife into the crematorium!
The tyrant, who had left long ago, waited for the humble young man to lose his love and come chasing after him. He also waited for the youth to stumble upon the carefully staged scene, burning with possessiveness and jealousy.
Instead, they owed each other nothing and went their separate ways.
The tyrant waited to chase his wife into the crematorium, watching the young man joyfully embrace his freedom and congratulate him on his happiness. His face expressionless, he crushed the cup in his hand.
In an instant, blood ran freely.
[Either love him with burning humility forever, or release the chains and let him fly free. He has always been spoiled and unrestrained.]
[Forget it. I'll win him back. This time, I'll lock him up even tighter... He'll never escape my grasp in this lifetime anyway.]
[World Two: Cruel, pampered, arrogant young master gong x Gentle, humble, rugged, dark-skinned bodyguard shou with a nurturing streak]
The bodyguard had been in love with his young master for many years.
His young master was cruel and supremely arrogant, always wearing an amused smile. His handsome, elegant, pampered face was forever marked by haughtiness and superiority.
He was willing to be his young master's plaything, just for the chance to clasp his ankle in his palm and humbly press a kiss to it.
His love was humble and gentle. He put his young master first in everything, loving him without limits or dignity. He was his plaything and pet, waiting only for a kiss of kindness.
But the young master was too cruel.
He was always so vicious and superior, so cold and haughty, as if no one in the world could ever reach him.
The bodyguard took bullets and blows for him, but rarely earned so much as a kind glance. A bullet pierced his chest, and the young master barely spared him a look. Instead, the young master was happily chatting with his arranged marriage partner.
The disillusioned, rugged, nurturing bodyguard packed his bags and quit. He gave his young master one last long look, then turned and left.
The young master stared blankly for a moment, took a sip of red wine, and figured the employee simply didn't want the job anymore and had resigned. He wondered if his next bodyguard could be less melodramatic and resentful.
Office crushes were a bad idea. His own life had to come first.
The gentle, muscular bodyguard who had turned and quit never got to see his young master realize his mistake and chase him into the crematorium. He didn't even get a single word of protest from him.
All he got was the cold balance in his bank account and a new job listing posted by his young master:
Applicants were not to be melodramatic or act like resentful husbands, either.
[His young master was still high above everyone, arrogant and untouchable, cruel and haughty. He never humbled himself, and he could always let go.]
Only...
[Would the young master who used to bury his face against his chest to sleep, who occasionally showed a vulnerable side, who was pampered and difficult to please, sleep in the arms of his new bodyguard and give him a hard time?]
[...He's back.]
The muscular bodyguard packed his things again, grabbed the job listing, and hurried back. He knelt at his young master's feet and humbly kissed his ankle.
The reserved, mature, gentle man lowered his eyes and cautiously tugged at the young master's trouser leg. His voice was low and husky, his breathing trembling.
“Young Master, my chest is bigger than the new bodyguard's...”
The young master looked down at him scornfully, then planted a shoe on his chest and ground it cruelly. His voice was cold and derisive.
“...Didn't you say you were done serving me?”
“Get lost.”
[His young master was just so cruel, arrogant, and haughty. It was that very manner that had bewitched him. He had to love him humbly and gently forever to earn his kindness.]
[His young master would never learn to lower his head, and he would never learn to soften. He was always haughty, always high above everyone.]
[World Three: Cruel, foolish, pretty-face-obsessed rich young master x Fake devoted husband, real mad-dog substitute shou]
The devoted-husband shou used to be a delinquent.
He was unruly, unrestrained, arrogant, and cruel.
He was an illegitimate son, a mad dog who didn't care if he lived or died.
Until he met the rich young master, who had lost his beloved first love and was completely bereft.
The young master made him a substitute for his beloved first love and drew up a sugar-baby contract. He suppressed his violent nature and became a devoted-husband shou in the style of the first love: he did the housework, cooked, warmed the bed, offered a shoulder to cry on, and could do everything.
But the young master was always looking through him at someone else, thinking of someone else, missing someone else... loving someone else.
When forced to choose between two people, the young master chose the other one.
The young master didn't love him.
[The young master ate two extra spoonfuls of rice today. He's so cute. When some people kidnapped the two of us, he panicked and cried so hard his eyes turned red. My heart nearly melted. But that little idiot got the name wrong. He should've told the kidnappers to choose me. He couldn't even say my name right. So cute. I wanted to kick the kidnappers away, hug him, kiss him to death, kiss him a couple more times, and call him a little fool. But what the hell, this little idiot chose someone else and left me behind.]
The mad-dog devoted-husband shou wiped away his tears, pressed his lips together, and turned to leave. His departing figure was carefree, and he was once again that wild, unrestrained big shot.
He waited for the young master to realize how he'd taken care of every little thing, how deeply he loved him, how he couldn't live without him, and that... he had already fallen in love with him.
He waited for the little idiot to kneel at his feet and beg him to come back. Ideally, he'd have to spend three or four years making it up to him. He waited for him to get jealous and possessive. He waited...
Instead, the young master ran into the arms of his beloved first love and went right back to being a pampered young master who let himself be waited on.
The mad-dog devoted-husband shou smoked one cigarette.
The mad-dog devoted-husband shou smoked two cigarettes.
The mad-dog devoted-husband shou kicked the beloved first love aside and punched him hard in the face. Blood flew everywhere, and the man's expression was cold and impassive.
[You bastard, do you even know how to take care of him?]
[If I ruin that face, he'll have no choice but to pick me.]
When the young master appeared, he stared in shock at the madman beating someone until blood was everywhere. In an instant, the gentle-husband persona he'd created shattered.
He wiped the blood from his face with a fingertip and gave a cold, mocking laugh.
“I don't love you anymore, you little idiot. You damn well chose someone else when you had to pick between us. What the hell kind of beloved first love is he, anyway? Don't look at me like I deceived you. I was pretending the whole time. You dared to choose someone else, you bastard. I hate you. I hate you so much, I hate you...”
“Baby, don't cry. I think I was possessed just now.”
[You think you can make me come back by shedding a couple of tears? Your wife-chasing-into-the-crematorium act is pathetic as hell. You idiot, I really ought to... Woof woof, baby, you little dummy, what do you want to eat today, and how would you like me to do it? Big Brother can make you anything. ^^]
[He's just a fool, loved by everyone. He seems simple, but he's heartless. You have to work hard to stay by his side.]
[World Four: Smiling, gloomy, beautiful A-rank villain gong, a deranged menace x Former nemesis turned devoted husband, then bitter, star-crossed lover, general shou A-rank, imprisoned, conditioned, brainwashed, and forced to bear children]
The beautiful gong had coveted the tall, handsome, honey-skinned general for a long time. The man had a narrow waist, broad shoulders, and a cold, fierce look that made him seem haughty and untouchable.
Not for any particular reason.
He was just hot.
The gong was obsessive and cruel by nature, a madman renowned throughout the Federation. He was brazen in his desire, directly imprisoning and brainwashing the general in a gilded cage he had built for him.
The man was dazed and had lost his memory. When he came to, he found himself kneeling at the gong's feet with a collar locked around his neck.
He looked up and saw the beautiful, handsome gong smiling. His narrow, bright eyes were murky, sweet, and cruel as they narrowed.
His voice trailed off in a low, teasing drawl.
“Good boy, I'm your husband... Call me husband.”
“...Husband.”
The man's voice was hoarse and halting. His broad, slender fingers, callused from holding a gun, touched the collar around his neck in a daze. Then, comforted by the gong's smile, he lowered his eyes and gradually sank into dependence on him.
The gong kept the man locked in his cage. The head he'd once held high now bowed obediently as he washed his hands and cooked for the gong. Once an A himself, he became pregnant and bore children for him, becoming a gentle and virtuous husband, pitiful and doting.
His once-full, muscular chest was covered in finger marks and had grown soft. His lean waist bore the marks of childbirth. The face that had once been cold and haughty now showed only docility and a helpless, dependent longing for his husband's affection.
He was also often left anxious and afraid of losing his husband's love by the gong's casual remarks.
Imprisoned in a daily cycle of brainwashing and abuse, he became a plaything belonging to the gong alone.
And then...
He regained his memory.
After spending years imprisoned by his disgusting, obsessive, perverted nemesis and nearly giving birth to his child, the general shou was practically driven mad with rage. He viciously shoved a gun into the gong's mouth and pinned him against the wall.
His voice was hoarse, his hatred bone-deep.
“I will kill you.”
“I'll kill you...”
[He didn't have to use such despicable methods. He could have just...]
But the beautiful gong only licked the cold barrel with his wet, reddened tongue and said with a hint of regret, “You used to do this too, but...”
He smiled, his long, narrow eyes narrowing in satisfaction.
“...You're welcome to kill me.”
The beautiful gong thought that a life where he'd spent the last few years as the man's nemesis, then just enjoyed a few days of domestic bliss with his husband, only to end up with another nemesis who wanted nothing more than to kill him and tear him apart... was absolutely fantastic.
His life would never be boring again.
He touched the man's cheek. His handsome face was filled with a tender, bewitching warmth that drew people in.
“From now on, let's keep being enemies, shall we?”
“Please, make sure you kill me.”
The general shou stared at him in a daze.
[...Something's not right.]
[This obsessive, perverted bastard should have regretted what he'd done after losing my obedience and seeing how much I loathed him. He should have humbly chased after me and begged me to be his lover and wife, becoming my dog, and in the end...]
The beautiful gong left in high spirits.
The beautiful gong, who had been “abandoned by his husband and child,” picked up the little cat he'd left behind in the general's gilded cage to keep him company. He rubbed the cat's fur and said gently, “Be good. Your daddy doesn't want to live with us anymore. How about Father finds you a new daddy...”
[Go find your own damn daddy!]
The general grabbed the gong by the chin. His face was cold and fierce, his voice vicious and his breathing repressed. “That's my cat. Give it back.”
The beautiful gong sighed. “But you told us both to get lost. Fine... I'll give it back.” He kissed the little cat's ear. “From now on, you'll live with your daddy.”
“So Father will go find someone new...” He smiled and turned to leave, only for the man to grab him by the collar again.
[...]
[...You're not even going to chase me?]
He was so mad he laughed.
The general shou pinned him in a corner, rubbing his canine teeth against the tip of the gong's ear. His broad, long-fingered hand supported the back of his head. His voice was low, cold, fierce, and haughty.
“You have two choices. One, I kill you...”
“Two, you call me husband.”
The beautiful gong looked at the man's cold, narrow gray eyes, filled with a strange emotion, and paused.
[1111111]
Then he frantically spammed 1.
The general shou remained expressionless, a vein bulging at his temple, his thin lips pressed together as he held back his anger.
But...
What if he didn't want the gong to find someone new?
He could only kneel at the gong's feet again, obediently presenting his chest. This time, though, his eyes were lowered and his face was completely red. Frowning, he spoke in a low, awkward voice, breathing softly.
“Hu...sband.”
[What else could he do? Put on an apron and go back to being his obedient, devoted husband. Even if he wasn't happy about it, all he could do was kiss him fiercely and let himself be bullied even more thoroughly.]
[Once the general shou realized there was a reason for the “imprisonment,” his heart went soft in an instant. Out of the way, out of the way, out of the way. My husband's obedient dog is back.]
[His life was broken and reckless, and he spent his whole life searching for meaning. He could only go along with him, love him, and live through this bitter love. It was only because he resented him for not loving him enough.]
[World Five: Love-starved young gong, Holy Son of the Demon Cult x Taciturn, devoted-to-the-Dao, battle-worn, carefree swordsman shou]
[World Six]
[Being near him meant being close to pain. Leaving him meant leaving happiness.]
1. I love reading melodramatic wife-chasing-into-the-crematorium stories. The more angsty and over-the-top they are, the more I love them. I don't discriminate against this trope. I love writing it and reading it. Give me more, more, more! I'll read any crematorium story, whether BG, GB, BL, or GL. I just used the basic premise of “You only love me after I stop loving you.” Synopsis dated April 11.
2. At heart, this is a sweet-and-sour, melodramatic, dog-training romance. Melodrama, melodrama, melodrama. Neither the gong nor the shou is perfect. The shou is a virgin.
3. The shou characters all have hidden gloomy, obsessive, madman tendencies. They compete and fight for what they want. Most are rugged, well-endowed shou, while the gongs are mostly handsome, beautiful young men. Young gongs. (P.S. A lifetime of loving cruel young gongs, rugged, strong shou.)
Theme: How could I bear to blame you for making a mistake? I gave you too much freedom.
