One day, my childhood friend Go-kun told me he’d laid an egg.
When he shouted, “My heart, unlock!” and transformed into a magical boy to save children’s dreams, I saw two big blue characters above his head:
“Male supporting character.”
My childhood friend refused to accept it. “I’m so perfect. How could I possibly be a supporting character?”
I looked in the mirror, saw the gray words “cannon fodder” above my head, and fell apart. “How could I possibly be cannon fodder?”
There had to be something wrong with this world!
...It did seem like something was a little off.
The male and female leads were everywhere:
A blond, clueless high school boy who ran a host club had the pink words “Male Lead” above his head.
A brown-haired middle schooler who burst out of his clothes in public at the mall, flames blazing above his head, had the blue words “Male Lead” above his head.
A poor high school girl with a fox spirit by her side had the pink words “Female Lead” above her head.
A shrine maiden in middle school with a dog spirit by her side had the blue words “Female Lead” above her head.
I was devastated. Seriously... Why am I the one who gets to be cannon fodder?
Later, I met a pink-haired guy with glasses who claimed to be a psychic. He told me I was a cannon-fodder character in a shonen manga, fated to kick the bucket at twenty-seven.
Only by stopping a brain-shaped curse from doing evil could I escape the influence of my cannon-fodder aura.
These days, even a brain-shaped curse can be a villain. That’s wild.
But when I saw the shining words “Male Lead” above his head, I fell silent.
...Maybe I should give it a try?
Reading notes:
1. Characters are alternate counterparts from the same series, in a crossover universe. I’ve lost count of how many series are included. The heroine is Miss Zenin, and the hero is her white-haired childhood friend.
2. It’s still a slice-of-life story, told in first person.
3. Synopsis archived: 2025.3.8
Revised: 2025.4.20
Theme: Break free from your predetermined fate and create a wonderful life.
