When a Corporate Drone Can See the Prize Amounts on Scratch-Offs

While traveling, overworked office worker Bai Le lost her phone. She never carried cash when she went out, so all she had on her was a little red envelope her mother had casually slipped her after a wedding banquet, containing a crisp 20-yuan bill.

What can you do with 20 yuan?

Her mother had said:

“If you ever lose your phone, maybe you can use that 20 yuan to buy a scratch-off lottery ticket, win the grand prize, and earn enough to get home.”

“After all, luck always balances out!”

Her mother’s words came true: Bai Le lost her phone. Deciding to make the best of a bad situation, she spent her entire fortune of 20 yuan on a scratch-off ticket.

Then she planned to go ask the police for help and borrow a phone to contact her family.

But as she stood in the shop, she suddenly realized she could see how much each scratch-off ticket would win!

Wow! Wouldn’t that mean she could keep winning until her hands were full?

Her first thought, as someone with no grand ambitions, was: At last, I can quit my miserable office job! From now on, I can live off my winnings and lie flat, waiting for my meals!

I’ve come across this sort of short drama so many times. What a tempting premise.

Since it can’t happen in real life, I’ll let my protagonist experience it in a novel.

Note 1: The protagonist has no grand ambitions.

Note 2: The author knows nothing about the lottery scratch-off industry and is making it all up.

Theme: A loss may turn out to be a blessing in disguise
