Lin Wantang knew that her Omega wife hated her to the very core.

In Wen Zhiqing's eyes, she was a lowly actress who had exploited a debt of gratitude and used their 100% pheromone compatibility to force her into marriage.

Looking at the Omega's elegant, cool features, Lin Wantang thought that if she gave her heart sincerely, sooner or later Wen Zhiqing would fall in love with her, even if only a little.

Day after day, Lin Wantang looked after Wen Zhiqing. When Wen Zhiqing was kidnapped, she took her place as the hostage.

During Wen Zhiqing's heat, she drove off the ill-intentioned Alphas, soothed the delicate Omega, then treated her own wounds alone.

When Wen Zhiqing laughed and chatted with her first love after her return from abroad, Lin Wantang quietly stepped away. She smiled and prepared hangover soup for the Omega when she came home.

But all she got in return was a gaze of ever-deepening loathing.

The Omega only touched the Alpha during her heat, clinging to her neck as they drifted together in a sea of desire. When passion took hold, they were inseparable, their pheromones entwining until they filled the whole room.

After waking, the Omega gathered her clothes to hide the red marks on her collarbone. A mocking curve touched her eyes. “You're just a tool, Lin Wantang. Did you really think you were worthy of me?”

The Alpha gave a self-deprecating laugh. Her Omega was the youngest business magnate in the country, while she was only a C-list actress. She truly wasn't worthy.

Most importantly, she was terminally ill and didn't have long to live. She could no longer care for the Omega as she had before.

When Wen Zhiqing coldly demanded a divorce again, Lin Wantang smiled calmly and took out the divorce papers, leaving the other woman staring at her in disbelief.

Wen Zhiqing had always been like a moon high above the mountains. No matter how hard a clown like her tried, she would never reach it. Now, she was letting go.

Lin Wantang did one last thing for her Omega. She left behind all the pheromones extracted during her surgery for Wen Zhiqing to use during her heats, then packed her few belongings and moved out.

Loving Wen Zhiqing had become too painful. She chose to set them both free.

Wen Zhiqing hated that scheming Alpha.

She hated Lin Wantang's tender gaze and the false affection she showed during her heats.

Only when her cruel words made the Alpha's face turn deathly pale did she feel a twisted sense of satisfaction.

She had prepared herself to loathe Lin Wantang, yet be bound to her for the rest of their lives.

But later, she frantically searched for Lin Wantang, almost maddened as she tried to catch the scent of her fading pheromones.

When she finally found Lin Wantang again, the other woman lay weakly in a hospital bed, her face paler than the sheets. Her features were distant, and she looked as though she had lost all will to live.

Wen Zhiqing clutched her frail partner, her voice trembling. “I'll get the best medical care there is and cure you. I'm your Omega. We'll be together forever.”

Lin Wantang only gave her a mocking smile. “But I'm not worthy.”

Wen Zhiqing had thought Lin Wantang was the most despicable person in the world, a clown who didn't know her place and dared to reach for the moon. But by the time she realized it had all been her own prejudice, it was too late. Her Alpha no longer had any love for her.

On a bright, sunny day, Lin Wantang was discharged from the hospital.

The moon quietly followed just within reach, dreaming of shining on the one she loved alone. But the former clown now stood wreathed in dawn's glow, a sought-after movie queen, laughing and chatting with others over clinking glasses. She no longer cared to look back at Wen Zhiqing.

Reader's guide:

1. One-on-one romance, no secondary partners, both leads are each other's only ones, happy ending. Neither lead has a romantic storyline with anyone else, and there are no unrequited feelings between the Omega and her first love.

2. The regret-and-reconciliation arc burns hot enough to turn everyone to ash.

Blurb for the planned second-chance, regret-and-reconciliation novel The Fifth Year of My Secret Marriage to the O-Role Movie Queen:

Shen Zhiwei is the youngest professor at a top university, and her Alpha pheromone rank is also top-tier. Unfortunately, she's wooden and clueless about romance.

Even when someone keen to gossip shows her a photo of the wildly popular wealthy Omega movie queen Zhong Luxi, she only studies it carefully for a moment before shaking her head. “Sorry, I don't know her.”

As if she were trying to identify someone from a missing-person poster.

This young professor doesn't watch dramas or follow celebrities. She has no interests outside of research. Even her students say Professor Shen is an iron tree that will never bloom.

But no one knows that Shen Zhiwei and Zhong Luxi have been secretly married for five years. They once held each other close through countless late nights, and Shen Zhiwei had kissed Zhong Luxi's cool lips more times than she could count.

But in the fifth year of their marriage, she saw less and less of her Omega wife. Most of the time, she could only see her on billboards in shopping malls or rewatch her films over and over late at night.

Or she would come across paparazzi photos on social media of her wife acting alongside some unknown young star, whispering and smiling intimately.

But Shen Zhiwei never complained.

In the end, it was Zhong Luxi who grew tired of her first. After they met again and made love, she lounged lazily in bed and handed over the divorce papers she'd had drawn up, her tone light and airy. “Professor Shen, the truth is, I was only addicted to your pheromones.”

“My addiction is cured now. Let's part on good terms. Don't worry, I'll compensate you generously.”

Shen Zhiwei silently took the papers. The person who had always been as bland as plain water trembled as she signed, but in the end she wrote her name, stroke by stroke.

As soon as she finished signing, she bolted out the door. Distracted and unsettled, she was struck and knocked to the ground by a car coming from the side. As her consciousness faded, the last thing that came to mind was her wife walking toward her with flowers and a smile five years earlier.

Fortunately, the car accident wasn't serious. After a few days of rest, Shen Zhiwei was discharged.

Her life was no different from before. After the accident, she immersed herself in academic research as usual and soon became the youngest academician in the Empire.

But after leaving the hospital, she was constantly pursued by a strange Omega. The woman was dazzlingly beautiful, yet her eyes were full of shattered sorrow. She stubbornly insisted that they had been in love for five years.

After Shen Zhiwei was elected an academician, her students kept her celebrating all night. Exhausted, she returned home and saw the Omega downstairs again. The woman had stood all night in the swirling snow, and her dim eyes suddenly lit up when she saw Shen Zhiwei.

The Alpha politely tilted her umbrella toward the woman, but her gaze remained clear and unfamiliar. “Sorry, but I really don't know you.”

*

Zhong Luxi had thought Shen Zhiwei was merely a remedy for her addiction, a way to pass the time when she was bored.

Until Shen Zhiwei forgot her completely.

They had been secretly married for five years, and no one knew they had ever been together. She was the only one who remembered their past.

Once, she said she didn't know her, but it was a lie. Now, those words had become true.

Bonus scene:

After a long time apart, the strange Omega suddenly blocked Shen Zhiwei's way again.

Her belly was slightly rounded, and there was a touch of stubborn confidence in her expression. “I've thought of an undeniable way to prove we were lovers.”

Shen Zhiwei looked surprised, but the Omega lowered her head shyly and gazed at her belly.

“Our child.”
