Shen Wang was born in Jiangdu and lived with his mother. When he was five, she took him to Daxing to reclaim their place in the family. From then on, he had a father, and also a “younger brother,” Shen Yingshu.

His father disliked both his mother and him. At the Shen residence, everyone could bully him. Shen Yingshu, on the other hand, was the apple of the family’s eye, pampered with the finest food, clothes, and comforts, and allowed to do whatever she pleased.

His mother said that all of it should have been his.

Shen Wang hated Shen Yingshu. He hated her for taking his father away, for causing his mother’s death, for being as pure as the moon while he was as lowly as mud. He wanted to tear her to pieces, and hated her most of all for treating him like he was worthless.

Shen Wang loved Shen Yingshu, someone he should never, ever have loved. He was afraid, struggled, and despised himself, but no matter how many times he tried to let go, he couldn’t forget her. In the end, she became an obsession in his heart.
