[Alternate-history Republican-era setting, happy ending!]
Unfinished. Don't read!!!!!
Shen Beilou took a fancy to someone.
The first time he saw Ji Xunyan, Ji was sitting in a dim corner of a dance hall, wearing a black overcoat. From a distance, he looked like a black-and-white photograph.
He seemed gentle, too, with silver-rimmed glasses perched on his nose, giving him a refined air.
But though he looked obedient, he was anything but once taken to bed.
Shen Beilou held sway over half of Yunzhou. Getting what he wanted usually took no more than a crook of his finger, but this was the first time he'd come away empty-handed.
But the title of Second Master Shen wasn't for nothing, and neither were the rumors that he was cruel, tyrannical, and used his influence to bully others.
Before long, that proud spirit that had once preferred death to submission was finally broken in his arms, though not without a few twists and turns along the way.
But why, when the person in his arms looked up at him, did his eyes seem like a stagnant pool?
When Ji Xunyan first arrived in Yunzhou, he met someone.
At first sight, the man's brows were like ink strokes, and his bearing was outstanding.
But that was only the surface. His true nature was overbearing, domineering, crude, and shameless.
Ji had refused. He had fought back. But that man was Shen Beilou, and this was Yunzhou City.
In the end, he got himself caught up in it all.
He leaned against Shen Beilou's chest, his eyes hazy. When he looked up, the man's eyes seemed to hold the waters of spring in the third month.
But Shen Beilou, how could you know that what you brought home was a venomous, brightly colored python, not a canary?
Yunzhou City had an unusual amount of autumn rain that year, and Shen Beilou had an unusual run of bad luck. After being visited again and again by the detectives and police, who told him he was suspected of murder, he realized something: someone had made him a scapegoat, and kept dragging that same sheep out to be slaughtered over and over.
He racked his brains, unable to think of anyone in Yunzhou City reckless enough to use him as a fall guy.
That night, holding the slender figure nestled under the covers, he suddenly realized that he had never truly seen the person in his arms.
Once the seeds of suspicion are sown, the truth begins to surface one piece after another.
But what did knowing the truth change? When Ji Xunyan appeared before him, battered and barely alive, Shen Beilou would still want to risk his life to protect him.
Ji Xunyan had never imagined that one day he would be wounded so grievously by his own poison.
But when Shen Beilou said those words and Ji pushed him away, he knew the poison had already reached his lungs.
Shen Beilou said, "Ji Xunyan, this time, I'm willing to be your scapegoat."
"Ji Xunyan, you really do hold a grudge."
"Shen Beilou, I never meant to use you as a scapegoat. You insisted on putting yourself in the line of fire."

Neither of them is a good person, but the author is.
